If you hadn't read it yet, I recommend African Kaiser. It's about Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck's military operations in East Africa. It also overlaps with Richard Meinertzhagen's fraudulence and the pursuit of the Konigsberg. and here comes the dude who gives me wonderful book recommendations. It’s a great read. An amusing side-story is whether or not Von Lettow had an affair with Karen Blixen (from ‘Out of Africa’ fame).

For me:
The American Revolution-Given the power of Britain at the time, there was simply no way a bunch of "farmers with pitchforks" should have won that war.
American Civil War-Taking the slavery angle away from it, it was a war for the 10th Amendment(states rights) and even with the slavery angle, the run in the mill rebel didn't really care about slavery. They were fighting for the honor of their particular state. But it's a fascinating read nonetheless. I recommend visiting Gettysburg. It's truly a moving experience especially where Pickett's Charge happened.
The Cold War-stuff of spy movies.

Most Americans will probably not want to admit this, but if it had not been for France the British would have won the Revolution. You should read this book

You should read this book Actually, the war was turning when the French finally got into it. Germany had more of an impact than the French did. Had von Steuben not come to train the undisciplined colonial troops the war might have been over before the French entered. The French provided much needed money and arms but aside from bottling the British navy in, they did very little fighting wise. Great leadership with people like Lafayette. So much so that Lafayette, Louisiana was named after him(Louisiana was named after Louis XVI as well). Fun Fact: Providing the fledgling Americans with much needed funds pretty much helped cause the French Revolution. Spain played a part too.

Since we were in grade school, we were taught about the French and how they helped America.
