I must have blinked and missed it because I asked later in the movie wait, Bryan Cranston's dead? I can't remember what tipped me off but it took my be surprise.

Captain Kirk in Star Trek Generations. It wasn't even so much that they killed him off, it was more just the unceremonious and abrupt nature of it.

Felt nothing with his passing. How many of those who felt something when he died are still mourning the loss of their very first toaster?

How dare you trivialise my pain, Toastie was a member of the family, he always knew when enough was enough, never to burnt but never not toasted enough, he was my friend...

Ditto on Bryan Cranston. Admiral Akbar in The Last Jedi. The Admiral's Name was actually spelled "Ackbar".

I was really surprised when John Travolta was blown away in Pulp Fiction by Bruce Willis. I didn't see that one coming.

In hooror movies some of the kills are surprising just for how/when they happen, like Rachel in Halloween 5, just because it was so meaningless, usually killing off a returning character would happen early on like in Friday The 13th Part 2, or it's something o build to, her death was just so there for no real reason, also not helped by the goofball cops scene just before it.
Killing of Danielle Panabaker's character just before the climax of the Friday The 13th Reboot, though she was the final girl, not the sister, how they killed off Kristen Hager's character being accidentally killed by the Predator was weird in AVP Requiem, how they offed Newt and Hicks in Alien 3 was also like WTF is this bullshit.

Sophie in Joker. I never got the impression that Arthur killed her. And why would he? She didn't wrong him in any way(just like others such as Gary and the two guests on Murray's show when he was invited didn't wrong him and he didn't kill them). It's just that the scene is meant to show that his relationship with her was basically a fantasy and it was only there to add fuel to the fire after he had found out that his mother lied to him all of his life and allowed him to be brutally abused as a child which resulted in his neurological condition and mental illnesses. When that revelation was revealed just as he did the gun to the head gesture on his own head to Sophie, he simply left her apartment. But hey, it's left up to interpretation with the audience.
