I feel Superman's thin disguise is meant to reflect the (imaginary) innocence of early century society.
Actually I just made that up. I've always had a soft spot for Superman and wanted to make an excuse. Although a hat and glasses would probably fool my wife, the poor woman is terrible at face recognition and is always getting movie and tv characters mixed up.
