Black Christmas 2019 isn't a bad movie. It's a movie aimed to empower women. There is nothing inherently wrong with that, just like there's nothing wrong with a man who might gleen empowerment from a film. Women can feel empowered and there's nothing wrong with that. Anyway, it's not supposed to be The Shining. We're talking about Black Christmas. The original is no crowning achievement in the the genre. But the hate for the 2019 film is beyond. I'm over it.

It’s not the fact that it’s a women empowerment movie. They can be great if DONE RIGHT!!! The problem with the movie is the message is “all men are bad, deal with it”. The characters were also terrible. I wanted NONE of these characters to live. Not only that the movie is Black Christmas in name only. Black Christmas 06 is still a bad movie, but at least it’s enjoyable. It also at least FEELS like Black Christmas. Yes the characters still suck in that one too, but if I had to choose between which group of characters I wanted to live, it would be the 06. Black Christmas 2019 will always be a bad movie. After a few years it won’t be remembered.

The only call backs I recognized was the dead body in the attic and the part where the girl is looking for her cat and it’s actually the killer. I would say the text messages too and the phone calls, but they weren’t vulgar.

I thought she was just strangled by Christmas lights. Thanks.

I guess I should have also mentioned that yes I know the original Black Christmas had a political message in it, but it was subtle about it.

Must've been so subtle that I didn't notice it at all. There was a character that wanted an abortion, but the boyfriend wanted her to keep it. It’s a small little detail and it only plays into the movie a little bit. It’s one of those blink and you’ll miss it moments almost.

I remember that, however I don't see the script building any kind political message or subtext around that plot detail (then again it has been some time since I last watched this).

Maybe not political, but it was definitely a message on such a controversial issue and still is. If your message is that “all men are bad” then you’ve lost your audience. It’s why 2019’s Black Christmas doesen’t work and won’t ever work. I’m wondering if the director or writer had been abused at some point and that’s why she felt the need to do this. It’s May and I’m still talking about how bad the 2019 remake is. Clearly quarantine is doing something lol.

I'm still pretty much opposed to ev n watching the 2006 film. I'm a huge fan of the original and giving Billy a backstory is even worse than giving Michael Myers one.

It’s May and I’m still talking about how bad the 2019 remake is. Clearly quarantine is doing something lol. I don't think that's what the new remake was going for. It's bad for a lot of reasons, but I think the fact that was so little time to make it has a lot to do with it. Developing the script to any degree beyond the lazy and stupid one that they had may have helped. To have at least several months of rewriting and developing new drafts that many other productions would have had could have made a huge difference. The main thing to me is that it was made with no understanding of tone. If it had gone for an over the top, crazy violent, and fun tone, the extremely shallow approach to the topics might have added to the comedy of a wild revenge plot. But the tone is all over the place, and never nails down the right one. The PG13 rating is certainly part of that, the low budget is part of that, but it's also just poor choices and really bad execution. The climactic scene shows these girls entering a room to take on take all these guys with seasonally themed weapons including one brandishing a toboggan, and another with a menorah. That could have been fucking hilarious, and if they had the ability with the rating, a stab in the chest with a menorah creating 9 squirting streams of blood could have been one of the funniest over the top 'splat stick' moments in recent memory. But these filmmakers had no fucking idea how to handle even their own ideas.
