There have been countless TV shows ever since the magic box was invented. Some were good, some were great, most were terrible but of the good to great ones, which one's stated around a season or 2 too long? For me...
Frasier-Fresh off of the success of Cheers, this spinoff began filming immediately after they took down the set of the iconic bar and it didn't take long before this show found it's own feet and when all was said and done had won countless awards. But right around season 7, the show started to lose steam. IMO, it reached his peak in season 5 with such classic episodes like Voyage of the Damned, The Ski Lodge, Room Service, The Perfect Guy, and Sweet Dreams(we'll leave out the totally out of place episode Beware The Greeks where we learn Martin has a brother...even though he had said in a previous episode that he didn't have a brother). After that, the show started a slow decline. Season 6 had it's moments but outside of the first act of Three Valentines, the show focused too much on Frasier and his failed relationships. Of course what tends to happen in shows with this long a run, there is the 'jump the shark' moment and while some can point out to Roz's pregnancy, personally for me it was getting Niles and Daphne together. Once that happened, gone was the sexual tension by Niles that Daphne was completely oblivious of and eventually Daphne's personality swung from a sweet, quirky Brit to a complete and utter bitch by the end of the series completing the trifecta of women who treated Niles like total crap(Maris, Mel, and then Daphne). By the last season, the cast was mailing in their performances and while the show went out on top ratings wise completing 11 seasons(therefore making Kelsey Grammer one of the few people to play the same character for 20 years), the show should have wrapped things up once Niles and Daphne ran off in Martin's RV.
Any more?

The Big Bang Theory - The first 6 seasons or so were gold, but when they got wives and kids, it lost something.
Two and A Half Men - Probably should've ended when Charlie Sheen got fired.

I discovered the original "Hawaii Five-O" TV series in syndication and bought the first nine seasons on DVD.
The series starring Jack Lord started out good, and kept getting better, with Seasons 5 and 6 being the best IMO. After Season 6, Creator/Executive Producer Leonard Freeman died, but the show remained very solid through Season 8, and Season 9 was good overall, but had a higher percentage of stinkers.
I've only seen as far as Season 10, by which time Hawaii Five-O had truly become a shadow of its former self. Overall, the Tenth Season is synonymous with repetition and mediocrity, along with a complete lack of edgy stories (except perhaps for the season finale).
After Season 10, Chin Ho (Kam Fong) left the series, and Danno (James McArthur) left after Season 11. The final season, the twelfth, was reportedly terrible and had none of the original cast apart from Jack Lord.
They should have ended the series after Season 9 or 10.

The X-Files. Love the show, but it should have ended at season 5 like Carter wanted. Also, the revival wasn't very good.

That 70s Show would have been smart to end a season earlier with the departure of both Topher Grace (the star) and Ashton Kutcher (most popular character).

Babylon 5. The last season was not good, though there were some nice moments like when Garibaldi took over Edgars Industries and fired the board of directors.

Castle should've ended with Season 7.

I used to think Seinfeld, but I have grown to love the last two seasons.
X-Files - I used to love this show but it went on about 3 seasons too long
Modern Family - has gone on 11 seasons too long
The Simpsons - has gone on 20 seasons too long
Happy Days - I had to look this up but this show lasted ELEVEN seasons! It should have stopped after season 4.
MASH - this lasted 11 seasons, too! It should have stopped after season 5.
Cheers - Another 11 season series! Should have ended after season 9.
Friends - should have ended after season 5
Big Bang Theory - when that ridiculously irritating Amy, the love interest to Sheldon and the most annoying character ever, joined as a regular the show became 'must miss' tv for me, up til that point it was a solid comedy, with some inspired comedy, especially by Jim Parsons

Babylon 5. The last season was not good, though there were some nice moments like when Garibaldi took over Edgars Industries and fired the board of directors. JMS originally planned for five seasons, but uncertainty over renewal had him ready to end the series after four. The series finale, "Sleeping in Light", was shot during the Season Four production run, and the originally intended Season Four finale, "Intersections in Real Time", aired as #418. If they had been allowed to follow their original plan, Season 5 would have been begun with the action packed battle for Earth, and been a lot better.

BTW, I recently completed a B5 watch with two newbies. It was a rewatch for me, and a first watch for them. When we got to Season 5, we went straight from #501 "No Compromises" to #509 "The Kingdom of the Blind", and IMO that made the season flow so much better.

I'm currently on a rewatch myself, and I am pretty much constantly aware of how badly it has aged. That said, UFO and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century didn't age particularly well either, and I first watched them in the 21st century. And loved them.

It's not that B-5 went on for a season too long. Even allowing for the fact that they thought they'd get axed after S4, and so had to rush the conclusion of the Shadow war, it still needed an extra season to give a satisfying conclusion to the B-5 saga. So again, it's not that S5 was a season too many, it's just that one would have liked it to have been better.

The first newbie consistently enjoyed the humor and the action in the show. The second newbie, who early on said she's "not 'wired' for fantasy", got sufficiently engaged to make predictions as to where it was going and ask very sf questions like, "Does David have a headbone?" As for not aging well, the second newbie did mention on more than one occasion that the computer graphics looked inferior to those of today. Of course, the DVDs cropped and blew up the special effects, so it's not exactly a fair comparison to the effects of today.

Yeah, I'm watching it on DVD, too - looks a lot worse than I remember from TV, especially with the cropped heads. Why on earth they opted for widescreen release for such a CGI heavy show when the CGI was only rendered for 4:3, I have no idea. I hope one day it will be released on some format or other (which probably doesn't even exist at present, because it's not going to happen any time soon) the way it was aired, in 4:3. But with Babylon 5's luck, they'll probably just port it from DVD and it'll be awful.

That Seventies Show?
It seems to me the great majority of shows either get cancelled too soon or drag out way too long. How many shows can you say lasted the exact right length of time?

That last season was so awful. The poor actor who played Randy. Ok, he wasn't very good but Olivier could have made those shitty scripts work. They didn't know what to do with the character. Is he the next Eric? The next Kelso? Do we make a new character and what kind of character? Do we have him hook up with Donna?
