She will be shooting episodes in May and June, which suggests she will be on air in the late Fall, maybe including Christmas.

Will E.J. be far behind?

That was my first thought! I know he went out on pretty bad terms with the show, but I've learned with Days to never say never...

After making my earlier post, I realized that she's probably being brought back on for Nicole's exit-- that would be November sweeps. And my guess is she will stay on the show, since the exit of Nicole (Ari Zucker) will free up budget for Sweeney to remain long-term. Also, Carlivati will likely use Sami's return as an excuse to age Johnny and Ali, since Will is dead and Sami would need some grown/teenaged kids.

I read the announcement as sort of a temporary thing like her other returns since departing from being on the show full-time. I'd be happily proven wrong if she winds up staying for good. I think the shadow of Sami Brady hangs long over the show as it is now.

The ratings always go up when they return. And this is something Ken Corday never realizes. A smarter producer would pay both of them whatever they want and keep them frontburner. It guarantees employment for everyone else.

Yep, exactly. The only mitigating factors I can think of would be Reckell's unwillingness to sign on at any reasonable price, how strapped for cash the show is, etc. I think Ken would say he's done his best to keep fan favorites front-burner, but I think we both know there's a pretty big gulf between what was possible and what we got in the past five or so years.

Thing is, I don't think Ali Sweeney really wants to work full-time as a soap actress. She has too many other gigs in her life, including her family, her books and Lifetime movies, etc. I think she is okay with occasional returns to the show for special occasions, etc. (and I agree with the thought that she could be part of a Nicole exit storyline), but I think her mindset right now is that she has grown beyond the career of full-time soap actress.
