North By Northwest Psycho Rear Window The Birds The 39 Steps alot of 39 steps. Have you noticed everyone that chose 39 Steps also included North By Northwest? I always saw it as a precursor, almost the template, to the later film.

You can sit in awe at the craft with most of his films, but those two I consider probably the closest to pure entertainment...make them now and they would be blockbuster star vehicles

Its an interesting movie when it focuses on character relationships, but once the birds come those subplots sort of lose drive and focus a bit.

It took a few viewings before I fell in love with The Birds. I agree it has a blockbuster formula as well...in fact it's a lot like the first blockbuster Jaws...on paper it really shouldn't work, but the guy behind the camera directs the hell out of it.

Everybody seems to like the same ones for the most part. Mine in descending order:
1. North by Northwest 2. The 39 Steps 3. The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) 4. To Catch a Thief 5. Suspicion

The Birds Frenzy (need to rewatch) North by Northwest Rear Window Psycho
Val Guest anecdote: He shared an office with Hitchcock and it was known that AH liked to play cruel pranks on people. One day his secretary asked Guest for 5 pounds. Although Guest was tight on money he lent it, saying it was important to get it back on a certain day since he had to pay his rent. The day came and he wanted and waited--then right before closing time, a courier shows up with 2 sacks filled with farthings. Guest hauled the bags to the bank to change them in a hurry so he could pay the bill.
So, in retaliation, he had everyone in the studio give him keys for useless locks around the premises. He tied a note to each "if found, call Alfred Hitchcock at...." and then gave them to people to deposit all over London. In train depots, on benches etc. He waited a week. Nothing happened, and then suddenly Hitchcock appears at the door and says: "how many fucking keys did you put out there anyway?"
The pranks stopped.
