Phillies avoid arbitration with Andrew Knapp and sign him to a 1 year $710,000 contract. First the Eagles lose to the Dolphins and now this. Somebody put me out of my misery

Out of nowhere, the Reds sign Mike Moustakas to a 4-year, $64m contract. I'm guessing he'll be their 2B with Eugenio Suarez at third. Great bat for that minor league ballpark.

Reds may be finally getting better. It's been a long time coming, but they may be actually putting a decent team together. Maybe it's because I was a kid during the era of the Big Red Machine, but I think baseball is better when the Cincinnati Reds are relevant.

I'll just assume that there's a full thread on the Padres trading for Jurickson Barthelomeus Profar that I'm not seeing.

He was reportedly the plan B option for the Braves if they weren't able to re-sign Donaldson. Wasn't expecting him to sign first. Makes it seem like the Braves will need to re-sign Donaldson even more now otherwise look around for trades like Kris Bryant or Francisco Lindor (if he could shift to 3B I guess).

I wanted Moose on the Phils - we just got rid of Franco - he would have been cheaper than Donaldson or Rendon and they could have loaded up on more pitching. We have a kid in the minors - Alec Bohm who looks really good but isn't ready to play everyday 3B - wonder if they'll throw Donaldson a loaded short term contract until Bohm is ready. That kind of scares me a bit- isn't Donaldson like 34? Just worried he may fall off a cliff since he's getting up there in age.

Phils move quickly and claim Trevor Kelley off waivers.
Kelley was in the BoSox organization and was drafted in the 36th Round in the 2015 Draft.
That's right folks - not the 36th pick in the draft - but was selected the 36th round.
There's 40 rounds in the MLB Draft?
1200 players are drafted?
I'd think they'd have something in place like the NBA/NFL has - i.e. two rounds (NBA) / seven rounds (NFL) and then players are just invited to camps
40 rounds?

They have a way bigger minor league system than all those leagues combined to fill out... for now.

Hall of famer Mike Piazza was drafted in the 63rd round. While I imagine he’s the only 63rd round pick that made it to the hall of fame, I think baseball has more successes in the lower rounds than other sports. Probably more busts at the top end too.

Donaldson will be 34 this week, but he's coming off of a very good year that showed he was healthy. Plus, he's coming off of a 1-year test deal so he's going to be looking for 3-4 years. Given that Rendon is looking at a 7/8 year mega deal a la Nolan Arenado, teams might be chomping at the bit to land Donaldson at half the length and total contract value. Pricey for a 34 year old with a tough injury history, but in this market, he'll probably get something along the lines of 3/75 - 4/100. I think Donaldson is a better fit in the AL. He's still a really good 3B, but with his injury past, I'd want him DHing 50 games or so to keep him healthy while maintaining his bat in the lineup.

Well one thing in the Phillies’ favor is Kapler is gone so Donaldson won’t have to pitch.

Per ESPN Insider Buster Olney -
Phillies seen as top bidder for Zack Wheeler
I'm fine with this (i.e. missing out on Cole / Strasburg (who I don't want)) as long as they get Hamels and Bumgarner too.
Otherwise throw the moon and stars at Cole and hope Hamels comes home too.

MLb is talking about a 25 round draft in August.
Also gutting the Minors, killing off entire leagues, trimming others. It's not right. The Minors are hotter than ever.
