This movie is at least 40 years old, perhaps 50. I don't remember in what era the film is set.
Two people (call them "A" and "B") are discussing finding a mate/boyfriend for Miss_X. (Miss X may have been one of the two people). They're at a church service. "A" points to "C" (a choir member) and says, "What about him?" With a look of disapproval, "B" then whispers into "A"s ear. Given the surprise expression on "A"s face, it's obvious to the audience that "C" had been castrated as a lad in order to keep his soprano voice for singing in the choir. This is confirmed when we hear "C" sing.

That has gotta be it.
I found the original (without English subtitles) online, but the context meets what I remember (about 33 minutes into the film).
What prompted this inquiry was an article that some choir boys were castrated until about 100 year ago. However, this film was set in current time (1961) as there was a rocket in part of the film.
