I'm not going to waste time on the bad and mediocre stuff.
Why waste valuable typing time describing stuff that sucks?
I'm only promoting stuff that is bringing their A Game....Well maybe a B+ Game too.
Uncharted 4 - This series has got to be my favorite franchise ever. This game is amazing. it's beautiful to look at , has movie level writing, great action, & great drama.
It may have the best ending(s) I have ever played.
The way it paces itself through the action and the story just hooks me. Imo, the gameplay itself is slightly less than Uncharted 3, but the overall experience is better than all of them.
My favorite non-gaming part is Nathan being in a market. It is full of people and they are all doing individual stuff and I spent a lot of time just watching them. I followed this guy carrying a ladder. He takes the ladder, places it next to the wall, climbs it, & then starts painting the wall blue. Who does this level of detail for a person you are supposed to just walk by?
It;s great. If anyone loves action adventure games as opposed to FPS, it doesn't get much better than this.
Big Little Lies - This show seems like a typical story about rich white people, but it's way better than that. I can't even explain it without it sounding like it's a typical show about rich white women and their angst. So just watch it.
The acting is on another level and especially between Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. Nicole Kidman is getting an Emmy. A great thing about a lot of HBO shows is their use of music and the music and cutscenes play pivotal roles in setting the mood of the show. It also blends in the lives of the men and the kids. It's a great show.
The Leftovers - Season 3 started last night and it's as trippy as last season. Pound for pound, last season was probably my favorite show of that year with International Assassin just barely being beat out by Game of Thrones episode 9.
It once again spin off in a different direction while holding to the same themes. The opening prologue is beautiful and sad in the same way last season's was.
No one is going to watch it, but it is so good it's sad so many miss it's greatness. Kudos for HBO giving it a final season.

I really enjoyed Big Little Lies... Nicole Kidman still gots it... If you know what I mean.... My only gripe: The reveal of the identity of the "father" seemed waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy too coincidental... I mean what are the odds? Mystery Science Theater 3000 - The new season is on. Seems a bit "off".. but, I'm just glad that it's back... Hope it gets better as it finds its own groove. Bought The Walking Dead: A Telltale Game Season 3... can't wait to play it.

I loved Big Little Lies. Great show. It sucks that they aren't doing any more seasons or episodes. A second season with the characters would be interesting, but I don't think it can rise to the challenges of what the characters went through this season. The biggest issue would be the murder part, but then that would change the feel of the show.
As a general rule I like mini-series concepts so I'm OK if it ended the way it did.
The author indicated that there could be a second season since the book delves a bit more into some of the characters.

VegasAgreed. I would have liked it if she just stayed confused by the whole notion because of the trauma. At first that's how I thought it would go down, but then they pushed it a bit. Another thing is I'm not quite sure what Jane does or how she can keep up with the Jones' there. She seems to have a lot of free time.

13 Reasons Why - I had to watch the whole thing before determining it belongs here.
At first, I thought the show was written too precise to be taken as true outline for what a typical person goes through to get to the point of suicide. Even by the end, the use of the tapes seems like a disconnect for the despair she faces. Most of the season reveals that Hannah is fairly popular, has a great best friend, & has great parents. This was all hindering me. Although I don;t think that a person who stupidly makes the decision to kill themselves is stereotypical, if a show is set to address suicide when few shows do, it would be a good idea to find a bigger representation of who typically does commit suicide. Hannah is not that person.
By the halfway mark, I decided to stop thinking of it as a show about suicide since it was actually more about the mystery surrounding why Hannah would do it and the coverup. Even then, it was almost average if not for the acting skills of the "teens".
But then episode 9 and above happened and it was all so well done and tragic, it's hard to forget any of it.
I was thinking about watching it with the kids, but I still don't think of it as a show that helps potential suicide victims. Maybe the bullies can learn something or the overall apathy kids tend to have surrounding various peer pressures, but even then the actions of the "guilty" people are too precise and conspiratorial. The better show to highlight what pushes a kid over the edge is American Crime's second season. Plus this show is a hard R- Something I think was a mistake.
The ending leads to the possibility of a season 2 and while I'm glad season 1 exists, I won't bother with a season 2.

Flowers for Algernon - Read this book finally. It was very good. Basically the story is about a mentally retarded guy who is able to become [too] smart thanks to an experimental operation. The writer did this thing where the story is a journal (I normally dislike this type of narrative) so you can see the progression of the protagonist from mentally disabled to genius and how this mirrors the mouse, Algernon, who went through the same experiment.
It's very good and very sad through much of it. I won;t say much but it does a great job of getting Charlie to realize what people really thought of him all those years he was too disabled to understand stuff.

Leftovers - I was originally planning on just discussing the shows after their season is up, but I can't contain myself. Leftovers is on another level. Watch this as soon as possible and be blown away by a story that while not entirely understandable at first, is hard to look away from. It is quite the achievement.
Not a lot has been top caliber these past few weeks. In fact, as far as movies I watched two mediocre ones yesterday.
However, I am going to give props to one of those mediocre movies for one particular reason.
Spectre - I avoided this movie for a while because I heard it was bad and it isn't really that good story wise. I couldn't even follow it and lost interest in it pretty quickly. In every way story wise, it was the lesser of the previous films including Quantum of Solace.
That said it gets a 100% perfect score in visual style. This is by far the most beautiful Bond film I have ever seen. From the opening tracking shot to the pretty spectacular explosions, everything was just superbly filmed. Kudos to Mendes and his film crew.

Not sure if I'll watch that. I'm watching 'The Fall' right now. Also, listening to some Jimmy Driftwood. How did you enjoy "The Fall"? I'm about half way through the 3rd season. Procedural stuff now so the story seems to have slowed a bit. I'm going to see it through, I really like Gillian Anderson in it, very strong female character. Some good stuff in it, one bit of dialogue that I remembered was: 'The males who felt threatened by females generally said that they were afraid the woman would laugh at them. The women who felt threatened by men said they were afraid the men would kill them."Big difference.

Started rewatching Lost...got through season 1. Such a good show at this point. It's all about the characters and their backgrounds and clashing personalities. The mysteries are there but kind of in the background for most of it. I took to Sawyer much quicker during this rewatch than I did initially. And Kate is as lovely as ever.

Edge of Tomorrow - TNT is doing some kind of marathon and I love this film. I just watch it over and over again. Better than Groundhog Day.
Tom Cruise has been in some of my favorite sci-fi films.
Kindred - Just finished this book on my flight to Denver. It's technically a sci-fi book from Octavia Butler but it's really a story about slavery. I generally dislike slave stories. They tend to be too clean cut regarding who the bad guys are and who the good guys are and there's little ambiguity. This book is rilling in ambiguity and not in the way that people are conflicted with what slavery is. The slave masters are just doing their job and the slaves, while still clearly hating, don;t know a way out of it. They arenlt in search of freedom since the punishment is so severe if they try to escape.
Anyway, it's very good and is not a particularly deep read. No one will feel white guilt or black anger reading it. The story is told matter of factly although the main characters, Dana and her white husband Kevin, go through the ringer.
Highly recommend it to all.

The only thing about Edge of Tomorrow is that Cruise probably redid some scenarios hundreds of times, so how did he not know the alien was hiding in the camper?
Maybe there was never a time she forgot to unhook it which is why he emphasized it, but then why didn;t he start shooting it immediately?
It doesn't matter because I love the scene.
