Ozymandias Just got to this episode of Breaking Bad and wanted to know what the title was based on. Now I know and it's a good poem so worthy of the thread.
The episode has been added to my perfect list btw.
I'm having a hard time believing the final two episodes will rival it and I kind of wished it ended hear.

The Sopranos Season 5...Just finished season 5 during a rewatch...spoilers...i forgot how few episodes people like Feech la Mana were actually in. Robert Loggia gave such a memorable performance with such a small role. All in all i really like this season. It sparks a lot of groundwork for the final season and closes down the Adriana storyline that's been ongoing since the end of season 3. The Tony/Carm separation storyline was both kind of frustrating and really well delivered at times. Glad its over by the end tho. The Tony/Tony/Chris dynamic was always good throughout. Especially the episode at Uncle Pats. Buscemi is always great. Featuring more New York guys is always interesting.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri...Martin McDonagh hasnt done a ton of films thus far...but im a fan of all the ones ive seen. They tend to have this quirky dark comedic atmosphere and Three Billboards perfectly fits that. At times it can be pretty dramatic...it deals with the aftermath of a rape and murder of a teenage girl and the mothers quest for resolution in a small town. But theres an awful lot of moments that are just so funny and over the top with profanity or such a matter of fact attitude toward something that would normally be traumatic. This is the third film ive seen by McDonagh...In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths are the other two...and Ive come to trust his style. I dig it.

It's fantastic 2 more weeks of complete holiday before I get back to work. I am going to watch The African Queen (Bogart) tonight and Lawrence on weekend for its fairly long.

Finished Breaking Bad last week.
I get the hype now.
It was one big cinematic experience. While some episodes felt like filler (I'm becoming a bigger and bigger fan of the 8-10 episode season), overall it was marvelous.
I think Boardwalk Empire remains my favorite show about bad guys, but BB is just so well done in terms of visuals and storytelling.
As I said before Ozymandias is in my top ten all time favorite episodes.
Walter White has got to be the luckiest man in existence for someone dying of cancer.

The only one I thought was unquestionably filler was the infamous "Fly" episode (that''s the only episode I've never rewatched)

It's not that filler is bad, it just unnecessarily stretches out a story that feels more cinematic than episodic.
I liked Fly largely for technical reasons although I like Walt almost confessing. I hear that the episode was a bottle one that helped pay for the meth lab they were using. since it was cheap to make.
I also think that the longest season should have been that long although it seems like it was split in half. Not watching it during it's run, I'm not sure but it feels like what they did with Walking Dead when I was watching that show.

Bilal - A New Breed of HeroAlthough - perhaps because of a nervousness about the reception in the American market - it is not made plain, Bilal is indeed a new type of hero : it turns out he is based one of the most trusted and loyal Sahabah (companions) of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and, of necessity, a black hero to boot. The animated film plays down a good deal of the original historical background, although 'based on a real story' in favour of an adventure arguing more generally in favour of freedom over slavery and, while there is a comparison between false and true gods Allah, as far as I could hear, is hardly mentioned if at all, while He-who-must-not-be-seen is replaced by one or two companions with no such reticence, presumably for dramatic reasons. The animation is excellent with an interesting amount of Dutch angles and a moving camera. Christian film-makers might do worse than watch this and reflect on how subtlety in handling this sort of matter can work to the best. It's a dark story, presumably for older children and teens only, which includes plenty of action, peril, torture and a ferocious battle, in tones and a manner influenced a shade perhaps by Prince of Egypt; but especially as it lacked wise-cracking animals, or toys, and cloying sentimentality, I enjoyed it thoroughly. www.imdb.com/title/tt3576728/reference

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs - The lack of discussion for this movie is disturbing. I LOVED it. I watched it last week and I'm still thinking about it. It is one of my favorite Coen Brothers films. I liked the trailer for it so was anticipating a time to sit down and enjoy, but I was surprised by the end result. I don't think I've ever seen a film that was so cheerfully bleak. Nearly every story ends horribly and the one with the happy ending still verifies how much the West sucked. If this had been the TV show it was supposed to be, it would have been one of my favorites. As an aside, the action scenes are probably the best I've seen in a western. Because it's an anthology, my list is: The Ballad of Buster Scruggs - Sets the perfect tone for what to expect and great music All Gold Canyon - The search for Mr. Pocket Near Algodones - The most Coensy of the stories...PANSHOT!!! Meal Ticket - The Gal Who Got Rattled - Seems as if it's going nowhere fast and is redeemed by the conclusion which helps to perfect the whole story proceeding it. The Mortal Remains - This is the only one I did not love. There is not sufficient explanation of the scenario so we're left wondering if this is real or symbolic of something else. It looks good and the dialogue is catchy in that Coen Brothers way, but by the time it ended, there was really just a nbig question mark which may have been intentional, but not satisfying. Here is the wonderful trailer that shows a lot and explains nothing.

I haven't watched a lot of movies that are worthy of this and I've also watched my share of mediocre, but given how boring the thread has become, I think I'll resurrect it.
So please feel free to share, but I'll add some TV shows later.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs - The lack of discussion for this movie is disturbing. I really liked this one.. Great performances by all. Stephen Root is always great. I didn't mind the lack of true conclusion for some of the stories. My girl really hated the end of The Girl Who Got Rattled. Now, just gota figure out what it all means...

I loved the ending and hated it because it was so dark which added to what was pretty unrelenting. I think the whole point of the movie was the West sucked and they used the romanticism of it to show that. Even the gold rush one was about a crazy old man who would do anything to get Mr. Pocket (That ending was harrowing and I didn;t even know it...). I want to know that guy's history. Meal Ticket is the one that infuriates me though. It would have been nice for them to show at least one good Indian though or one that showed why they hated people so much.

Started watching some of the Wrong Turn sequels...theyre awful...but I found my viewings of the redneck torture family subgenre was lacking a bit.
Wrong Turn 2...reality show set in the mountains of west virginia...enter hill people. I actually really liked Henry Rollins survivalist character. Other than that they mostly sucked...which is a running theme with these movies ive found out. The thought of getting thrown into a giant meat grinder did freak me out some.
Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings...I guess this is the origin story. A sanitarium in west virginia with a bunch of deformed people...including the OG hill people from the first film...they escape and slaughter everyone there. Flash forward some years and a bunch of horny teens go snowmobiling to a cabin, get lost, wind up at that sanitarium. Encounters with the hill people ensue. I have to point out that this movie came out before Cabin in the Woods and it might just be the sole inspiration for the idea to make the characters completely stupid. There was one character, Daniel, who is the voice of logic and reason and hes completely shut down every time he suggests the correct decision. The stupidity that the characters showed here made me hope that they would all die.
For some reason hbo doesnt have 3 available...but i figured theres not gonna be a solid amount of carryover.

They have a blast with that kind of old time dialogue and are really good at writing it. An interesting mixture of tragedy and comedy, definitely in the top tier of what they've done.

I was waiting for the wagon trail head get into a shoot out with the hand, as I figured the hand would assume that the head just took the girl out and shot her so he'd not retire and stay with the wagon train. Well.. Ya gotta be better than a chicken.
