“I just wanted to make a movie exactly like the first,” said Emmerich, who while the film was underway, lost his leading man, Will Smith, to another tentpole project. “But then in the middle of production Will opted out because he wanted to do ‘Suicide Squad.'” Smith led the original “Independence Day” film as a wisecracking marine fighter pilot, and was slated to star in the sequel, but the actor reportedly cost too much for the already expensive sequel.
“I should have stopped making the movie because we had a much better script, then I had to, really fast, cobble another script together,” Emmerich said. “I should have just said no because all of a sudden I was making something I criticized myself: a sequel.”"

These films come and go so fast, I forgot they did a sequel.

There is nothing wrong with making a movie that won't win any Oscars.
As an Uber-fan of the original, I am glad we got any kind of follow up at all ( good or bad )

Wow Robert Loggia was in it too. Yeah very briefly.
He just basically stands there and salutes Bill Pullman's character.
Still, It was nice to see him again just 1 final time and in a positive way.

Wasn't Robert Loggia CGI'd into the movie? Didn't he pass away before the movie was shot?

He should regret making every movie. Stargate and ID4 have fanbases. Even some of his other movies have plenty of people that enjoy them

He should regret making every movie. You don't even like The Patriot? Braveheart 2: American Boogaloo? Eh. I like the bit where the guy is decapitated with a cannonball.

He summed it up best. A rehash of the first movie wasn't what people wanted, the ones that actually wanted a sequel anyway. What he should had done was the reverse. Have the humans be the invaders (whether it be the ID4 aliens' planet or their own mothership) Something different for a change.
