A sketch is very short (about 5 minutes like with SNL) while a short film is about 20 minutes (Three Stooges).

One is presented as a stand-alone piece of film, the other is a usually shorter piece part of longer show

According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a short film is "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits."

Interesting question. A skit tends to be off-the-cuff, perhaps provoked / inspired by something. A short subject film implies planning by notion.

Then how can you know the answer to my original question? Then it's the wrong answer. Ask somebody else.
