Fanny and Alexander - one of his most entertaining films, and his richest exploration of the cold religious life as opposed to the warmth of family and magic. For some years this has been on my Christmas Eve viewing list
the Magic Flute- my favorite opera film, one of my favorite backstage films. The charming sets and the presentation are wonderful. The voices while not the best I ever heard are perfectly up to the job, and it’s almost better not to have huge powerful magic voices overwhelming the folkopera . The Zarastro and Queen of The night are terrifying.
Seventh Seal - I’m not sure what I love about this so much. It’s magical, it’s probably the realest film about the Middle Ages.
Passion of Anna- I really love the theme, the complete inability to know whether anything you think you know about people is true.
