I Googled this question and didn't really get a good answer. Anyone know? Google just says they do, but not why. Is there a better answer than, "It's just tradition," or is that it? I know nothing about bullfighting and I've never watched a fight, but killing the bull seems a bit excessive, no?

To me it’s pointlessly torturing an animal for entertainment purposes. The matador at the end is doing his thing on a bull that has already been hurt, wounded, bled, and exhausted. Where’s the sport in that? |

The animal is in such a state it cannot be saved by the time the killer stab is administered and the bull is usually sold to an abattoir.
It's about the only thing I loathe about Mexico City where the bulls are usually not as large and strong as they are in Spain, not that size and strength can help them in a ring. The ring in MC can seat over 40,000 spectators.

When I've heard an attempt at justification it's usually that the bull gets to die with honour in the fighting ring rather than getting knocked on the back of the head.
