Has anyone started planning their Thanksgiving menu? WKD and I don't like a typical Thanksgiving meal and we both hate the holiday (except for football for WKD). This year WKD has requested homemade Nachos Belle Grande - no turkey for us. (I do love stuffing and am keeping an eye out for Bob Evans herb seasoned stuffing in the store.)

I've been asked to have Thanksgiving dinner with the same friends who hosted a few people last year. There will be 7 or 8 of us, and I've been asked to bring a sweet potato dish. My hosts don't care for sweet potatoes to be "sweetened," beyond their natural flavor. And, I agree. So, there won't be any marshmallows, brown sugar, etc.. If I recall ... and, that's somewhat iffy ... last year I steamed them, and added some butter, salt/pepper, and a bit of fresh thyme. I'll probably do that again. But, I may find something different. Who knows?
I'll also take a red, and a white wine.

Ah, seafood is wonderful for Thanksgiving. The Dungeness crab season, usually, opens just before Thanksgiving. There have been some glitches in a couple of the past years. Here's hoping for success, this year!

We go out now for Thanksgiving-mainly because most of us work double time from right before that to Christmas. Ah shrimp, was just thinking of the day I decided no more shrimp for me. Day before Thanksgiving, came home from school to my mum cooking away. As per usual she fed an army. There were the shrimp waiting to be peeled, washed, etc & she asked me to do it. I started to take them apart & said what is that? My mum said POO! with a big smile on her face. Mind you I was about 9 at the time & said yea ok I'll do this, but won't be eating this crap ever again.

Here's hoping for success, this year! Dungeness is great! any recent news??! I haven't heard any recent news about a start date, yet. But, neither have I heard any warnings that the season might be in jeopardy. I think that's a good sign. If it's a "go," we should hear soon. I'll let you know. My understanding is that the various states set the seasonal limits. In California, it's usually November-April. But, I was in Seattle/Port Angeles, last July, and I had Dungeness crab. The recent problems that we have had was when the water was warm enough to allow a bacteria (can't recall the name), to thrive, and pose potential danger.

UPDATE: Evidently there will be a slight delay to the opening of "the season," due to the migration patterns of whales/turtles. But, with any luck, we'll have crab in time for Thanksgiving. www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Commercial-crab-delayed-Dungeness-start-14820375.php

haven't yet decided for sure ,but it's between bone in roast pork loin or cornish game hens, along with some other yet to be decided stuff.there's only the two of us so it won't be a really big meal.
Edit: got the supermarket circular yesterday and centercut bone in porkloin chops are on sale for $1.79 lb.called today and they will give me a roast for the same price. the mrs somehow finagled two church boxes of food which means we'll get two frozen turkeys and a bunch of other stuff.I'm still gonna get the pork roast and freeze it since this is such a good deal.I'll cook one turkey and give the other away to someone since we don't have enough freezer room for another turkey and the roast and whatever other frozen stuff we get shopping this week.

In the last couple of weeks, I have had a resurgence of interest in Cornish game hens. It's been years since I've done them, but they're on the "try again, soon" list.
There are several videos on YouTube that I have been viewing. A number of those videos mention the hens as a great alternative to the Thanksgiving turkey. They're easier/faster than turkey, and for a small group, you don't need 9 pounds of bird.

I love turkey, and it's just me now, so I'm thinking I'll try my hand at roasting a very small turkey, if I can find one. I understand Butterball puts out one called the "Li'l Butterball" and they can be as small as six pounds. I'll see if I can find one of those and give it a try.

I always found Tyson's Cornish game hens in the frozen meat sections of my grocery stores. I see a lot of them in my local grocery stores.
