They left out a lot of the middling responses from people like Jon Schnepp and Kristian Harloff.

The 99% positive comments will be ignored and the 1% negative comments will be taken as proof that the movie is bad.

They left out a lot of the middling responses from people like Jon Schnepp and Kristian Harloff. Schnepp's review wasn't "middling," it was balanced. He found one problematic aspect of the movie and immediately followed up with praise and a demand for a sequel. It's this kind of misinterpretation that starts flames. Harloff is a bit tone-deaf as a critic so I wouldn't take his review to heart even if it were stellar. SaveSave

Schnepp said it was uneven, but he still liked it. Harloff gave it a resounding MEH (and this was his most anticipated CBM).
Jeff Sneider also said it didn't really work this time. It was too forced (and I felt the first one was too forced).
Even in a lot of the positive reviews (like Frosty from Collider), you can tell that it's not anything groundbreaking.
At worst, it's meh. At best, it's not as good as the first one. Confirmed.

He may not have liked it at all and that would be unfortunate because I actually respect his opinion. That said, there is nothing on God's green Earth that's going to keep me out of that theater on opening night. SaveSave

I' m just surprised because of what I expected from him I'm surprised that some of the detractors in this thread aren't using the out and out negative early reactions to bolster their case. There are quite a few notes from reviewers that are a lot more critical than Jon Schnepp's. Sophomore outings have been the real problem for the MCU in my view (with the notable exception of Winter Soldier). Bigger than villains, tone or anything else haters want to play up in the press. I'm hoping GotG V.2 can break that trend. Nothing is as exciting as the beginning or the ending of a franchise. The middle tends to be mediocre by definition (with few exceptions). It's the middle - the character(s) are just chugging along with the sophomore blues. Marvel should consider compressing their footprint down to two-part films in some cases if you ask me. Middle chapters are often the best ones.

That gives it a pretty good shot at being a very good movie. As a fan of the first, I wasn't expecting this one to be as good. GOTG is a collection of oddball characters in space with a 1980s soundtrack. It was a fresh concept. With a movie this great, the sequel could either be a carbon copy of the first (which would be stale) or a new twist which leaves fans asking why they changed what worked so well the first time. It's a catch-22 any sequel of a wildly popular film faces, and if the filmmakers manage to capture even 75% of the lightning in a bottle again, I'd say it's a success. I expect volume 2 to be entertaining as hell but not quite as enjoyable an experience as the original, if for no other reason than the newness has worn off. I can't imagine this creative crew, this cast of characters and this setting producing a 'meh' experience for fans of the source material, particularly because they've already proved they can hit it out of the park.

Honestly, I thought the first one was just okay. It wasn't as good as people were making it out to be. A lot of the humor felt really forced.

See it's funny, I also thought the humor was sometimes forced but I found the cast and tone so charming I forgave it. Like they could afford to suffer a few hits.

Reviews are going to be off the charts good and this film is going to blow the box office to pieces.

Honestly, I thought the first one was just okay. It wasn't as good as people were making it out to be. A lot of the humor felt really forced. I thought it was every bit as good as people made it out to be and I'm sorry you didn't catch on to it. GOTG was almost a perfect film if you ask me.

I'm almost certain I'm going to love it but, I'm easy to please. It is so disheartening that so many of us as fans are always perpetually dissatisfied, hyper-critical and butthurt over everything.SaveSaveSaveSave

So if you don't like it, don't see it. If it sounds cool, see it. How every movie is.
