Do people realise the quality difference is the main point. Blurays especially upscaled on a 4k tv look stunning. Some of my blu rays look better than some of my 4k discs

Based on the OP's example... I would agree it makes no sense to save $2 for a movie you care about as the image quality difference is easily worth the extra $2, especially for a movies that stand out. but then again if it was not a movie that stands out, I would never pay anywhere near close to those prices to begin with regardless of DVD/Bluray etc. even movies I mildly like (which is only about 1 out of every 5 movies I have seen over the long term) I don't think would be worth more than $10 TOPS, although probably more around $5-ish.
but personally I think Bluray is a bit overpriced and DVD is definitely overpriced as a movie on DVD should be noticeably cheaper than the Bluray copy as it's old tech. so with the OP's $17.99 and $19.99 examples... I think a typical movie should not cost more than $14.99 on BluRay and DVD should be $12 MAX. either way, anything over $20 on the high end is BS and I don't care what format it is.
p.s. the sad thing is the movie industry is greedy as hell. for example... a typical super hero movie that made a boatload of $ in the theaters but yet they seem to charge at least $20 for these movies when they are released on BluRay when they could easily lower the price to something more reasonable and what's worse, instead of milking the higher price for a little while, so they get those who are in a hurry to buy a movie and might pay the premium $, they seem to keep the price high for months if not years which is BS. like 'Avengers: End Game' is still about $24.99 on Amazon for example.

Yeah, it hate it when new DVDs are almost as expensive as new Blu-rays. I try to save up to purchase them as much as I can, or I just go for the cheap stuff.

Won't DVDs and Blu ray be obselete soon? I play them them, but people I know no longer buy them. I've noticed also that department stores are allocating less shelf space for stocking DVD & blu ray.

Well that would depends on what you mean by soon. Also most DVDs and Blu-ray`s are sold on the internet not in department stores. And there are still plenty of people who buy DVDs and blu-rays.

I can see DVD being obsolete, Blu-Ray I can see sticking around for a good while, I don't think physical media will go the way of the dodo bird though, not everyone is on the streaming bandwagon, it is the same with regards to ebooks vs physical books.

Within 10 years I guess. There seems to be a continual drift away from DVD - starting with the end of the video rental business in the last few years..(10 years ago my town had 10 rental outlets - now there are none) .
Meanwhile, in the last 5 years high speed internet fibre now covers the whole town and streaming deals continue to become more competitive and cheaper...not to mention the conveniance of viewing via the web.

It's a real shame. I don't want to depend on streaming services that can take away films on a whim or when the internet goes down. If I like it and want it, I'd rather own it.

I got the player, started getting some DVDs and then within a couple years of that, out came BlueRay so here I am unless they make a combo VHS, BR and DVD player all in one. I'm frugal, like to save money and will even get used copies of discs which the OP didn't think about or suggest. Getting ripped off? I don't feel like it. As for picture quality? I'm not one of those anal retentive nerds that really pays attention to it nor cares. So what if I can't make out that tiny speck in the background is a fly?

I don't like it much - I was not happy about the collapse of the rental business, but if I want to watch as many movies as I do, I've got no choice. Also, the range of DVDs on sale has become limited to the 'hits', while imports have virtually disappeared from the shelves (where I am.)

Younger people have less money, the trickle down economics never reached them. Rent is crazy, and everything is going up in price constantly. Blu-rays are not always an option for some. Then there's the stubborn and the cheap.

Blu ray is a failure. But some people just can't admit it. It will die alongside DVD. If you haven't gone digital, you're doing it wrong

Blu ray is a failure. But some people just can't admit it. It will die alongside DVD. If you haven't gone digital, you're doing it wrong I bought a blu ray player 1 year ago. there was a only one solitary player in stock. Asking why?, the guy said "nobody buys them". I bought it because my first player developed a problem loading blu ray discs - it was fine with DVDs. And just recently the same thing has happened with my current player! I'm not buying anymore blue ray - I can't even play the discs I've got. The name brand I bought is not a cheap one and apparently it is a recurring issue with blu ray players. Plays dvds fine.

Then there's the stubborn and the cheap. Exactly. When you don't have much money, a penny saved is a penny gained.
