Blade Runner 1 and 2 Terminator movies Equilibrium Farenheit 451 1984 The Road Avatar
All these movies, and other titles I'm not remembering at the moment show a bleak and dismal future on Earth filled with polluted and dark skies, war and disease, an oppressive government and an out of control civilization filled with anarchy.
Are there any futuristic movies that show a bright and happy future filled with a promise of hope? I can't think of any titles at the moment.
Or do we just stick with Jetsons cartoons?

I remember thinking that Luc Besson's The Fifth Element had a future with a nice look and vibe......and I think relatively rain and despot free.....but you're spot on, Warren (still love that user name).
Outside of the Jetsons and some Star Trek places on earth....and Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds Are Go future.......it looks pretty grim.
Beam me up, Scotty indeed.

Beam me up, Scotty indeed. Thanx for the reply and the shout out about my name. My middle name is Warren and I am for peace and yet it's also a play on the title of the famous novel. I made up a joke that my original last name was Peece and my parents who met in college were literary majors and hence gave me that middle name. In reality it was the name of an Uncle of my mom's.

Yes and no. It shows a repressive regime which drives the free thinkers. rebels and anarchists literally underground. Plus, seashells. And Taco Bell is now gourmet? Need I say more?

Also, Avatar may fit if we are talking solely about Earth and not humanity.
If we are talking about the planet, there's not a lot out there, but Avatar is about hope and utopia.

Well, Star Wars - Return of the Jedi.

I don't know about that one, I think much of the earth's population dies, and the survivors live on a weird spaceship searching for a new home cause we failed the last one...

Logan's Run is a pretty nice world - until you hit 30 years of age.

Return of the Jedi is set in the past. What about Star Trek?
The Thirteenth Floor seemed to end on a positive image of the future.

The Thirteenth Floor seemed to end on a positive image of the future. BUT whose past? That may or MAY NOT be ours.

Also, Avatar may fit if we are talking solely about Earth and not humanity. If we are talking about the planet, there's not a lot out there, but Avatar is about hope and utopia. Kinda... From our understanding, Earth is in some kind of ruins. Sure, the good guys win in the end but think about the cost. They left a huge path of destruction that will take many, many years of things in the natural world to recover. Main characters such as the blue chief and the head scientist are dead because of the humans and so was an awesome pilot who sided with the blue aliens. That is the thing with these movies that have war then a "happy ending." They make us forget all the bad stuff that happened on the way to the endings and those characters we like all of a sudden don't matter as if they were not there to begin with.

That still may refer to someone else's. OH RIGHT I mean, oh right I see what you meant.
On the other hand, they did say Star Wars characters show up in the Well of Souls in Raiders of the Lost Ark so...
