www.golfdigest.com/story/why-is-it-so-hard-to-make-a-good-golf-movieIt has Peter Mullan as Old Tom Morris and Jack Lowden as the Younger. The movie is called Tommy's Honour. The article stressed the difficulty in getting an actor with a swing that is good enough to convince. Matt Damon tried it in Beggar Vance and looked like a high handicapper, Keven Costner played around with it in The Tin Cup and Bill Murray challenged some flowers in Caddyshack. By far the best I've seen, was Stephen Dillane in The Greatest Game Ever Played, depicting the legendary Harry Vardon. Dillane was himself a 9 handicapper. There are a few actors with low handicaps. The Quaid bothers, Samuel L Jackson, Mark Wahlberg and Hugh Grant are all single-figures and believe it or not Tim Henman plays off scratch.

Jack Lowden, a 27 year-old from Essex. He's had supporting roles in Wolf Hall (Thomas Wtayy) and War and Peace (Nikolai Rostov). No idea whether he has ever swung a golf club. Filmmakers seem to think that it is something you can learn in a week or so, like pool.
To be fair there is a lot more to the story than golf, as I understand it.
