Not exactly country though a few of his songs did have a country feel.
I would call it more like Modern Folk.
A great singer/songwriter. One of the best we ever had.

Stayed tuned for the much anticipated "Canker Sore Appreciation Thread". Coming soon.
I joke. Have to respect anyone who sold that many records. But I agree with Zos. If you grew up in the 70's, you couldn't avoid John Deutchendorff. I tried with all my might.

Once I got past his goofball image and how annoyingly popular he was in the 70's, I began to appreciate his music. A gifted songwriter and actually a pretty good guitarist.
Yeah, I like me some John Denver. "Sweet Surrender" is probably my favorite of his songs.

Once I got past his goofball image... Yeah, I know what you mean. LOL! Funny thing, everytime I re-watch an episode of M*A*S*H with Father Mulcahy (William Christopher) I can't help but think of John Denver, because they look a lot alike, and seem a lot alike too... ...how annoyingly popular he was in the 70's, I began to appreciate his music. LOL! My Mother loved his music... and as a kid, while travelling across the country in the family RV in the early 1980s... I was forced to listen to "John Denver's Greatest Hits" (1973) on 8-Track Tape (And Other Albums Too)... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Denver%27s_Greatest_HitsBut seeing how I "grew up" with his music, it stuck with me, and I can regular listen to his most of his music. While I can listen to (many of his songs, and) all the songs on that album... These are my favorites: "Take Me Home, Country Roads" "Follow Me" "Leaving on a Jet Plane" "Sunshine on My Shoulders" "Rocky Mountain High"

Years ago, I was surprised to learn that John Denver wrote: "Leaving on a Jet Plane"... The original title of the song was "Babe, I Hate to Go"...Which I incorrectly assumed was a Peter, Paul and Mary "original", which was a big hit for them in 1969... And THEN John Denver sang the song as a "Cover"... Nope. Both "versions" of John's song, were BOTH released on albums in October of 1969... It was included in his first solo album: "Rhymes & Reasons". John re-recorded the song in 1973 for "John Denver's Greatest Hits"... Maybe that is why I got confused. LOL! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaving_on_a_Jet_Plane
