The US doesn't have an 18cert like the UK, but films that are rated R in the US can be 18cert or 15cert in UK.
In NZ recently, the teen orientated horror pg13 Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, was rated R16, which means no one under that age is permitted to view it at all. It was only M in OZ, with is just a recommendation for mature audiences over 15, no restrictions.
Does the US still have the X certificate? Apparently that was the kiss of death in the old days as they could only play in sex cinemas or some strange ruling. I grew up in the X, AA, A, U. Era of UK cinema, Much easier to understand now I suppose. Never really got the US system that allows kids to see age inappropriate films as long as they have an irresponsible parent with them. Think they have R and R17? masterofallgoons is correct, the X rating no longer exists in the United States. Any movie that has sexually explicit content or graphic violence that is too hard for an R rating would now be rated NC-17 (no children under 17 allowed). Sometimes when a movie gets an NC-17 rating the distributor may want certain scenes removed to obtain an R rating.

I am coming from the perspective of someone who didn't think it looked very good to begin with and who most certainly was not seeing it in theaters. Sounds like most folks around here weren't too impressed either. So, if "we" weren't going to show up for it, why the heck wouldn't they try to reach for a wider/different audience? A crap movie is a crap movie regardless of rating. Remember how everyone bitched about Alien Vs. Predator being PG-13? And then they gave us Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem with a hard R? And remember how the latter movie was an even bigger piece of shit? Ratings are irrelevant. If this Black Christmas remake was a good but ultra-violent film to begin with, they wouldn't be tinkering with the rating. This isn't 1988 anymore. They are simply trying to market it to a wider audience because they can smell people like us not liking the film from miles away. So, try what I'm doing: I was planning on forgetting this film before I knew the rating. I plan to continue to forget and move on to something I actually *am* interested in. I did already mention about the rating for a wider audience to get more mulla. Yes, I agree, either way it will be crud, but crud with more blood and guts will at least give it a piece de resistance. I hear where you're coming from, but I need more than just some nice splatter to fully enjoy a movie. Otherwise, it's just gore porn.

The overt girl power vibes make me not care to see it.

I truly feel sorry for young people today, they are growing up in a culture of extremism and stupidity.

The director admits she wanted it to be rated R and the studio decided they wanted more little girls and guys who desperately want to be anywhere in the vicinity of little girls to see the movie so they slashed it to make it more teeny bopper friendly for the grrrrl power crowd. Somehow the chick director caving in and sucking the studios balls like any good prostitute would do makes her a hero to all the shit stupid morons on twatter? Director wanted it to be R, sells out to the studio and somehow she's a strong powerful Goddess and all men are worse than Hitler?!!!! Yep even you pathetic little male apologists who would cut your best friends throat for the slight chance a fat girl would smile at you are worse than Hitler but keep on groveling anyway.

Well, the original is virtually bloodless while the previous shitty remake was made at the height of the Saw/Hostel era with all the gore and R ratedness it could muster.
Not that it makes a difference, I probably won't bother with this movie either way. The original is a perfect standalone movie and it's almost a blessing how underrated it was so no sequels could be made to fuck it up, unlike Halloween (another great standalone slasher that was scarier the more mysterious the antagonist was).

A lot to unpack there. It's just a movie. One that was probably going to suck anyway, regardless of anyone's political agenda/views. Can't we all just chill and go watch the original instead?

I had a notion it might be. It didn't look very good anyway, now I defiantly won't be going to see it. Yes, you 'defy' them! I agree though. I wasn't going to go see this one anyway, and this is more evidence of how.lame this is. My question is more with whether or not this sort of rating actually helps. Everyone knows that these kinds of movies are aimed at younger audiences, but is that R rating really keeping anyone away who would have gone? Maybe it makes a small difference and since these movies are cheaply made and only need that small margin of difference to be profitable, maybe it will pay off... ...But I think it's more indicative of a lack of confidence in the movie than anything.

I'm sure it will be on Netflix or Amazon prime in time for next year's October Challenge. Will give it a watch then.

I enjoyed the 2006 picture, a different take that was supervised by Bob Clark. Like 'Sorority Row' (2009), it complimented its source material. Now Clark's no longer with us, this one's a tough sell.

I don't understand why they felt they had to make another version anyway. The last one wasn't well received, although I myself didn't mind it. I thought the last act was quite suspenseful and well done with the girl escaping the killer between the walls.
I thought the '06 remake was laughably bad, especially the flesh cookies. I haven't seen it in a long time though.

Yeah, it definitely wasn't perfect, but it had a pretty satisfying mean streak that teen horror in that era most certainly did not have. Good cast, too. I'd say it's a pretty solid 6/10.

For the life of me, I can't recall if I've eeen the '06 remake. If I did that's a bad sign.

Jesus fucking christ, dude. Relax. It's a shitty movie. You're clearly bringing some very personal baggage to this. Not at all. Just pointing out how ridiculous the comments were on the article linked in the op. The director had no plans to target teen girls and said she wanted it to be rated R. As many new directors have to do she caved in to the studios "suggestions" and suddenly (possibly studio idea again) shes declaring the kinder gentler PG version was actually so that all those curious females who have desperately wanted to see a horror movie but have been barred from doing so (by some mysterious cabal I assume) can now FINALLY see a genre that was previously unavailable to them. Suddenly the director is a social media hero for breaking the glass ceiling for watching horror movies and any male who was hoping for an R rating or who knows from the trailer the movie is shit or who dares make fun of how ridiculous and pathetic the need to make villains of people with a different opinion is not only a bad person but is also "clearly bringing some very personal baggage to this". Sorry if you don't see the humor in the hyperbolic silliness of social media like I do. I forget how important social media is to many people today since I' The desperate need of lonely people to finally have other loners to bond with against various "toxic" people who don't share the hive mind is both bizarre and interesting to me. Also very funny in a sad way. Clearly you took my comment about pathetic male apologists very personally and I apologize as it was not intended that way. Relax bro. No need to be so defensive. It's just a movie. However, Obviously the lady director is truly a heroine who has FINALLY made it possible for girls to watch a horror movie and anyone who jokes about what is a milestone event and definitely NOT a transparent attempt to recoup money on a bomb is a bad person. Hopefully you and the others who were triggered by my sarcastic and apparently evil post can sleep better now.

It didn't seem like you were bringing personal baggage for calling the movie shitty, but because of the crazy rage tirade where you name check Hitler multiple times. You have to know that your initial response is everything you think your railing against... you have to. To call anybody else 'triggered' is especially silly. As much as I'm impressed by your 'I-know-you-are-but-what-am-I' approach of attempting to make fun of me, it's lost on me. I really don't give a shit about this movie or whatever manufactured online bullshit you're so deep into. That's the benefit of not having any social media outlets outside of this site. You might want to lay off some of those.

This is yet another example of Hollyweird watering down certain films originally aimed at older audiences. SMH.

I’m so confused as to how they’ve managed to remake Black Christmas twice and somehow forget that the original was a WHODUNIT mixed with When A Stranger Calls. They have seemed to keep the Whodunit but forgot the stranger in a house idea. Black Christmas is such an easy movie to remake. Hell I could make a better remake in my sleep.
I shouldn’t be so angry about this, but Black Christmas is one of my favorite Christmas movies (YES it’s a Christmas movie in my opinion). I doubt the director has even SEEN the original. This is nothing more than a female empowerment movie, which is fine, but NOT FOR BLACK CHRISTMAS!!!!
