p.s. movie of similar subject matter that are much better... The Ninth Gate (1999)(8-8.5/10)/The Devil's Advocate (1997)(7.5-8/10).

It is very atmospheric and stylish. Quite controversial for its time, but repeat viewings I have found aren't that appealing. The Believers - 87' is more fun and entertaining.

One of those movies that I didn't really care for on the first viewing, but years later I caught it again and found better appreciation for it. Dark, moody, complex, and full of surprises. The ending in particular is a knockout. Mickey Rourke is perfect in the leading role as a seedy private eye, and Robert De Niro makes a good Satan.
I remember the controversy about the sex scene between Rourke and Lisa Bonet, and how director Alan Parker was forced to trim much of it down to avoid an X rating. It was widely believed the MPAA ordered the cuts because of Bonet's squeaky clean image on the Cosby show at the time, but it was a rather kinky scene. In any case, Parker was furious about it and he quoted as saying "I hope no other director will ever have to go through the same stupidity as I went through."

It's been a long time since I've seen it, I didn't think much of it, but if I saw it again now, I might reassess it more positively.
I know one thing I liked about it when I was younger: Lisa Bonet was yummy to look at.

Saw it when it first came out, and though, "WOW! Pretty daring!" I still get a kick out of watching it. It's okay.
