A Quiet Dream (Zhang Lu) – South Korea Birdshot (Mikhail Red) – Philippines Old Stone(Johnny Ma) – Mainland China via Canada My Heart Leaps Up(Liu Ziwei) – Mainland China Headshot (Kimo Stamboel & Timo Tjahjanto) – Indonesia
The first two on my list would definitely be on my shortlist for best films of the decade (non-English language or otherwise).
I also concur that 2016 was a very good year – even if I was doing a top 10, there would be things that I would reluctantly leave out. My honorable mentions would go to (in no particular order):
The Handmaiden (Park Chan-wook) – South Korea A Man and a Woman (Lee Yoon-ki) – South Korea Raman Raghav 2.0 (Anurag Kashyap) – India After the Storm (Hirokazu Kore’eda) – Japan Antiporno (Sion Sono) – Japan Ma’Rosa (Brillante Mendoza) – Philippines I am Not Madame Bovary (Feng Xiaogang) – Mainland China The World of Us (Yoon Ga-eun) – South Korea

A Quiet Dream (Zhang Lu) – South Korea That one just missed my list, an understated gem. Really like his near experimental previous film Love and... also.

I've only ever seen the one Zhang Lu film, but would like to check out more of his work. The only copy of Love and ... that I can find appears to be unsubtitled.

I was lucky enough to see it at a festival. Would also be interested in seeing more of his work.

Incredible year. I had to choose between a lot and the first two could easily make my top 10 of the decade.

The Red Turtle [France/various] [no dialogue] Does it count? There's no dialogue so I guess technically it's not in English, plus it was produced by a country whose primary language isn't English. I'm ruling it eligible but it was a great year so if you want an alternative: 8 A Quiet Dream [South Korea]
