Fred Cox - former Minnesota Vikings kicker and inventor of the Nerf football has passed away. RIP. Did you have a version of Nerf growing up?

Just looks like a foam rubber ball.
Did he invent foam rubber balls then?

When I first saw he died, I thought of starting a thread, then I spaced out. Glad you started one!
I had a Nerf, a few of them. Of course they weren't the real thing, but still lots of fun. You could really throw them far.
One of my all-time Christmas gifts was a Chargers Nerf that Santa was kind enough to bring. 😉👍

Used to love throwing them around on the beach

Just looks like a foam rubber ball. Did he invent foam rubber balls then? It pretty much was foam underneath - there was a thin layer of mystery Alien material from another Universe on top that peeled after one use. As kids growing up around here - especially in a heavily populated area like Philly - a lot of us played '2 handed touch football' on the street - i.e. on blacktop, cement - i.e. no tackling since you were playing on cement - the Nerf after repeated use would sadly look like this below (I've used far worse)- with cracks in it and chunks of foam missing -

We used to get ripped and throw it around the quad at school. People would get so pissed at us.

I had one of those Nerf vortex’s. Friends and I would often try to see who can make it whistle the loudest by chucking it as hard as we could.
I also had a Turbo but my dog got a hold of it and tore it up.

If I'm not mistaken, he was in the last wave of the "old school" kickers who kicked straight-on, and did not use the newer 'soccer-style' approach, which has since become the standard. I'm curious who was the absolute last of the straight-on kickers to retire in the NFL, still kicking that way......anybody happen to know ?? SAVE FERRIS

Nerf didn't exist. And I saw Cox kick in the 60s and 70s.

Nerfs didn't last long on my street growing up... unless you count dogs & cats eating them to pieces.
I was in the mini football era, you could throw that thing as far as a baseball.

Is this the only thing a football player has invented?

Still bitter over not getting the Nerf fencing game back in the 80's!

Is this the only thing a football player has invented? I'm pretty sure the very first one(s) invented the game of football.
