why didn't Huttons career really explode possibly more then where he ultimately ended up. seemed like he'd be a big star.

That seems to have happened with many of those promising young stars from the 80s; they have a few theatrical hits, but then their careers take a nose dive.
But one thing's for sure about Timothy Hutton is that he's been having a very busy TV career lately. He's the star of The Haunting Of Hill House, he's had a recurring role in How To Get Away With Murder, the list goes on.

I do like him but yeah some don’t make it all the way. He’s kept busy on television. Leverage was a great show and The Haunting of Hill House was an excellent update for the story.

Tim Hutton's a very good actor, however I never got the sense from him that he had the fire in the belly to make it into the major leagues as a star. He may simply not have craved a starry career. In his early years as a star player he appeared in a number of decent film. It's not like he disappeared or went into eclipse after Ordinary People. The sons of Eddie Albert, Robert Walker and Robert Mitchum had careers in feature films with varying degrees of success, never came close to equaling theirs fathers' success. Tim Hutton has done better than most of them.

Maybe it's genetic--his dad, Jim Hutton, followed something of the same trajectory: a fairly hot early film career, then a nosedive out of stardom and ending up a primarily television presence.

He peaked too early. He started out together with Sean Penn. They were both in "The Falcon And The Snowman" and I thought Hutton gave the stronger performance of the two. But then he won an Oscar relatively early and after that his career started going downhill.
Penn on the other hand slowly built a strong body of work. He had to struggle a bit and did a lot of supporting roles, but he kept working with great directors.
