A very funny man, whom I enjoyed immensely. He's great. Somebody I imagine would be a lot of fun to hang out with.

Along with Jack Benny, Red was Johnny Carson’s mentor in show biz. He loved the guy.
Did not know that. I like watching the old Johnny Carson interviews. I grew up watching David Letterman and I'm loyal to him (he's an Indiana boy like Skelton), nowadays I like watching uptight New Englander Seth Meyers who I think is a thoughtful, cultured and thoroughly decent guy, equally at ease interviewing authors, poets, politicians or superstars, well versed in the arts as an interviewer should be, and capable of handling people from any walk of life (he's an ageing "indie kid" like me!). More power to Meyers.

I've never heard a bad word about him, although Skelton himself admitted to having uttered a remark since attributed to - and quoted by - many: observing the crowd assembled for producer Harry Cohn's funeral, he cracked, "Just goes to show ya: give the people what they want, and they'll always show up."
I recall my late mother telling me about attending one of his radio shows in the '40s. When the broadcast concluded and was off the air, the irrepressible Skelton simply continued performing just for the studio audience, until the network people insisted the studio be cleared for the next scheduled show, whereupon he joined the ushers escorting the audience out. When I had the opportunity to see him onstage at the Anaheim Performing Arts Center in the mid-'80s, I didn't let it pass by, and he did not disappoint. In his 70s then, he remained ageless. Just Red, being the clown he loved to be.

And though I don't remember a lot of the show, I DO remember his incredible energy for a man in his 70's, and the fact that he had a packed house convulsing in laughter over the course of the evening.... SAVE FERRIS

Harry Cohn was a much despised Hollywood producer, nonetheless his funeral was well attended by the stars. That caused Skelton to quip, "Well, Harry always said if you give people what they want, they'll come out to see it,"

I recall us sitting around the tv back in the day, cracking up over Red. My mom, who had a minor career as a singer in some NYC nightclubs when young, remembered him as a standup comic with a rather salty routine which obviously never made it to television. I suspect he was a genuinely nice guy, but I think one of my favorite moments of his is a cameo scene from the original Ocean's 11, where he plays--hilariously but convincingly--a version of himself as sort of the 'anti-Red Skelton':

Watch the Birdie! 1950, publicity pic, they used to show this a lot on Swedish television in the 1970's.. A toned down Red in Three Little Words, a wonderful old-fashioned MGM biopic, and it was funny, unlike many turgid old biopics. Music and mimicry in Bathing Beauty, as the only male in an all-girls school. Off course we shall always drink alcoholic drinks moderatly!

Growing up, his show on TV was a staple in my parents household. I loved his schtick. After he passed away, I remember reading somewhere that he owned a huge pornography collection. However, I was never able to verify that.
