Broadway Star Joan McCracken only made two major motion pictures: Hollywood Canteen and Good News. She was in the original Oklahoma! as a dancer but became known as “the girl who fell down” due a pratfall she did in every performance.
Hollywood signed her, but she did not take to tinsel town and returned to New York continuing career in several hit musicals and plays as well as television. She was married to Truman Capote’s longtime partner Jack Dumphy and then Bob Fosse. Capote model Holly Golightly, in part, after her.
Suffering from type I diabetes, she died at age 43.
