The final full press build-up to the Infinity Saga's finale. Truly exceeded my expectations, not least of all Josh Brolin absolutely nailing his Thanos performance. As I read/heard upon release, this is in effect Thanos' movie. It has origin flashbacks of his vision, & he's not even truly painted a classic villain either. This movie legitimately had ppl question whether his 50% offing was good or bad. That's where we were in 2018. That would've been laughed into the ground at 2008... some cosmic baddie wanting to course correct the universe like that.
The other more obvious angle was how on earth (pun) would bringing everyone under the MCU sun into the same film space (pun?) play. Guardians, Avengers, etc, how does Tony Stark meld with Star Lord... how would Captain Rogers meld with Groot?? Dunno, but they did, it worked, & most of us seemed like it was a new Y2K scare to be laughed at. The Russos & co. mapped out character mashups that worked best on paper & would marry the best on-screen; I'd say they did a great job, as great as anyone could've all things considered.
To its story proper, it was nearly vital that Thanos could command instant gravitas & bring a heavy bookend for all the previous MCU films leading up - another borderline ridiculous request. Otherwise, that journey would've been all for what?
I probably wish there were more deaths &/or emotional wallops, & perhaps a bit less dialed back on the humour (to be fair, they managed to funnel the most juvenile stuff into the most juvenile character, Spider-Man).
Zoe Saldana as Gamora is another standout who basically bridged Thanos with everyone else. Her performance was terrific.
I don't know quite what else to add... the Endgame blu commentary unveiled several creative tweaks, like Banner/Hulk's transformation was 'scheduled' for Wakanda... & yet, they rightfully decided not to juxtapose that crowd pleasing bit of a gag up against Thanos' vanishing snap. Interestingly enough, Rogers' first appearance was also initially plotted for Wakanda... & yet so late into the film, might've felt nearly a cameo.
It's my #2 fav MCU title because it holds probably the finest balance of drama, emotion, & levity in a single film... for a saga ever trying to push those traits, never quite fully able to juggle all 3 at once like IW (or AOU for me). I'm also a huge sucker for a journey, rather than unveilings & payoffs... EG could simply never satisfy my imagination like IW.
My MCU favs:
1. Avengers: Age of Ultron
2. Avengers: Infinity War
3. Captain America: Civil War
4. Avengers: Endgame
5. Captain America: The First Avenger
6. The Avengers
7. Thor: Ragnarok
8. Guardians of the Galaxy
9. Ant-Man
10.Iron Man
