I knew this guy who cut Paul Newman's hair before a talk show appearance. He showed me a pic. He worked in a tv station and Newman was a guest and wanted a quick haircut so this guy had to do it. He mentioned it frequently. So much so that another guy said to me, "Martin's a nice guy but..I'm beginning to hate Paul Newman."

My mother's favourite actor. She loved The Long Hot Summer. When I was a teenager Butch and Sundance was my second favourite movie. Too many great ones but I'll go with -

Make special note of Doc Hudson's eyes ! "CARS was the highest-grossing movie of his career." "Paul Newman considered his performance as Doc to be the best he'd done since The Verdict"

A Newman top ten HUD COOL HAND LUKE HARPER/THE MOVING TARGET CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF THE TOWERING INFERNO THE HUDSUCKER PROXY SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH THE LONG HOT SUMMER TORN CURTAIN EXODUS HMs THE STING HOMBRE PARIS BLUES BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID TWILIGHT THE DROWNING POOL WHERE THE MONEY IS EMPIRE FALLS SILENT MOVIE Sorry - THE HUSTLER just didn't work for me. I gave it 3 tries. He was in some dogs though - WUSA probably his career nadir - I'm imagining he knew WHEN TIME RAN OUT would be crud when he signed on. Worst performance - HEMINGWAYS ADVENTURES AS A YOUNG MAN - beyond awful as a punch drunk boxer - He made co-star Corinne Calvet look like Garbo! Underrated - His turn in THE OUTRAGE - consensus view was/is that he was no comedian - but I thought he was a lot of fun in the comic section here.

As much as I like Exodus and The Hustler, I thought Newman was overshadowed by most of the rest of the cast in both. But he certainly gave a lot of excellent performances in a heap of other films.

Seemed like such a genuinely good person, I was so sad to see him leave us way too soon. Cool Hand Luke is my favorite, so funny and heartbreaking. Since he's been in so many great movies, I have to mention The Verdict. Such an astounding performance and the movie takes you further than you're prepared to go. My Mom always raves about Hud, which is a fine movie also. I think it's just that that's when her Newman crush began.

Why Paul Newman? Well his CV holds up to scrutiny for incredible versatility, no genre frightened him. He was a bloke who blokes wanted to be and who women wanted to be with. Some of his character portrayals are simply scintillating, fully immersed in the roles, often sexy or funny, dangerous or strong silent types, just magnetic. And to cap it all he was a real top bloke in real life, refusing to be drawn into press pumped rivalries with the likes of Brando and McQueen. My second favourite actor of all time, a true classic thespian of his generation, and a rare occasion where I genuinely shed a tear when he passed. My only regret being that Master Hitchcock couldn't have found a better movie than Torn Curtain for the pair to collaborate on (which actually wasn't a box office flop as some believe, but it's still poor fare). A personal top 12, can you name them all just by the stills?
