Oh contrare...you probably are a movie buff. If you weren't, the list would likely begin and end with Steven Spielberg.

Also, I've been meaning to ask where the shot in your avatar comes from? It reminds me of a more elegant version of this infamous shot from Satantango:

I quite like Aronofsky, Kubrick and the Coens. The rest are all decent, but not among my favorites. 1-1011-20

Richard Linklater 19. Bong Joon-ho 20. Jean-Pierre Jeunet There's a tendency in a lot of film-based forums to think there's some sort of 'bar' you need to overcome to be a film buff, and I think that's just plain ol' gatekeeping at work. The only requisites for being a "film buff" is that you consider yourself passionate about film, or that watching them means something to you. Whether it's Lav Diaz you're passionate about or Michael Bay, that doesn't really change the fact. Even if your only favorite director were Steven Spielberg, if you feel passionate enough about him or a number of other films made by other people who you wouldn't categorize as 'favorites' based on their body of work (say, being a fan of The Matrix as well but not caring for any of the Wachowski sisters' other work, for instance), you would still be a "movie buff". Sure, others might have their own thoughts about it or take your opinion on the medium more or less seriously, but it doesn't deny what those films you watch and enjoy mean to you.
As for the list and how it aligns with my personal preferences, whilst I like a fair bit of these filmmakers I do think the overall list looks very "IMDb top 250". Lots of post-New American Cinema and modern foreign powerhouses. Nothing wrong with liking any of it though no inclusion strikes me as particularly interesting or idiosyncratic. I can't pick one out and say "oh, curious to see this guy in the list", in other words. Again though, it's your personal set of favorites, and it should only reflect your own tastes.

I see where you're coming from with this and I appreciate your feedback but I think you can figure out what I meant by that. I used the word buff but I could've said something else. Bottom line is; a guy with a list with a larger variety of generational directors (40's/50's/60's...) and has a few obscur names on his list (ex: abbas kiarostami) is more deserving of the title of movie buff than a semi-standard movie-lover like I. I say semi because none of my friends could even name an Asian director.

I haven't seen all the films of very many directors and of those only animated movie directors. I'll make a list of those whom I've enjoyed many films at a high level. The order is rather rough and I might revise it depending on my thoughts at the moment.
Alfred Hitchcock Buster Keaton Hayao Miyazaki Stanley Kubrick Charlie Chaplin Peter Jackson Isao Takahata Christopher Nolan Satoshi Kon Sergio Leone Quentin Tarantino Jean Pierre Jeunet Marcell Jankovics Guillermo del Toro Akira Kurosawa Frank Capra Billy Wilder David Lynch Bill Plympton Karel Zeman

As I am too lazy to make my own:
"The director is the most overrated artist in the world. He is the only artist who, with no talent whatsoever, can be a success for 50 years without his lack of talent ever being discovered."
Orson Welles
