The only time I can't enjoy a season is when deluded management can't see a failure forest through the trees.
Otherwise, there's always hope for potential & whatnot. I think that's been one of the best attributes of 21st century coverage - a team never feels fully out of the woods because ppl are already making copy about what's next & who's coming. Baseball shouldn't be a qualifier & yet it's there 6-7 nights a week all summer long... how can you say no to that?
Fantasy sports also helps, though admittedly that doesn't make me run to the standings very often.

Sometimes I enjoy the season overall more when my team isn't in it. This NFL season, I'm 100% focused on the Bills. By this time, I'm barely watching, paying more attention to the better matchups. The reverse is true. I was stressed about the 2018 Red Sox in the playoffs. I didn't want to see them win 108 games then choke in the playoffs.

Nice now, we wouldn't get the Niners-Ravens game if the Bills were playing. I still hear Bills fans saying "We should have got Garoppolo when that team from Massachusetts traded him". NE aren't stupid, they wouldn't have traded him to a division rival. Some laughed when they drafted him. Who, Groper? Polopony?

Depends on the sport. In NRL (Rugby League for all you yanks) there is only one team: the Dragons. And when that one team is out of contention, I'm done.
In AFL, I can watch pretty much any matchup if ut's a good game. Ditto baseball and cricket.
Then there's sports where I traditionally followed one team, like Williams in the F1, but eventually I just started following drivers around. I usually get behind Aussies or brits (particularly non-English brits) but just can't like Ricciardo.
Max Biaggi was an example of following a rider to a different sport (MotoGP to Superbikes). Never watched an SBK race until Max went over and now I probably prefer it to the MGP.
