Marvel Studios has confirmed that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will in fact be taking the lead on Captain Marvel. Boden and Fleck are best known for their film Half Nelson, starring Ryan Gosling. They’ve also gained praise for their 2015 indie flick Mississippi Grind, starring Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Aside from their film work, they’ve also directed a number of TV shows, including episodes of Showtime’s Billions. Here is the official statement posted by Marvel Studios, regarding the decision: screenrant.com/captain-marvel-movie-directors/

I just hope they have the visual flare necessary to turn in an a-level debut for the character. SaveSave

Translation: We banked on rookies before so why not again? They aren't rookies, they've directed their share of films- Ryan Gosling was even nominated for Best Actor for Half Nelson.

flasussNot at this scale or in this genre. This doesn't speak to experience so much as it says they are established. They are newbies to the CBM genre.

At this point, there's no reason to doubt Marvel's selection process. They've earned our trust.

ArArArchStanton In a major way. The usual suspects are trying to tilt this narrative towards the Marvel doesn't take any risks - these are WELL ESTABLISHED directors argument. There is equal parts risk and genius in this latest pick.

There is equal parts risk and genius in this latest pick. Oh I see what you mean. 100% agreed. These are competent choices who have shown a strong ability for the craft of filmmaking, but yes, they have not done this before. Marvel simply feels they've seen enough to know they have what it takes and they will support them in every way to make them successful.
