I am talking about watching other characters making bad decisions. Not the specifics of the situations. He is just using gangsters to show it in this case, in Taxi Driver he shows a cab driver doing it, in King of Comedy he shows a wannabe comedian do it, in Raging Bull a boxer etc. They show a window into another world and cause me to reflect on my own behavior and the behavior of others through the stories he tells. I don't see it that way. I think it's like the Sopranos-there is no one to emulate or use as a role model. It's like looking into a window of people from an alien world but there is no lesson to be learned. In the case of the character in GoodFellas, it ends with him in the witness protection program so for him crimes DOES pay since the alternative was being killed or in jail. He's griping that he wasn't a big shot (the same in Casino--griping that Las Vegas went soft)-there's no self-reflection. There was no alternative path and there's no personal connection to any character (unless one wanted to be a gangster).

The Irishman is good, but GoodFellas is one of the greatest movie ever made. So its not even close.

The Irishman
When it comes to Scorsese's gangster movies, I rank like this...
1)The Departed (2006) - 7.5-8/10 2)Casino (1995) 3)The Irishman (2019) - 7/10 4)Goodfellas (1990) - 5/10 (Thumbs Down)
for the record... Goodfellas/The Departed was a 10/10 for me at one point. Casino topped out at a 9/10.
p.s. if you want to count Gangs of New York (2002)/Mean Streets (1973) they would be below Goodfellas for me with Gangs being #5 and Mean Streets being #6. both are a 5/10.

Goodfellas is your energetic fun days, The Irishman is your slow death. Both have their place, but I prefer Goodfellas.

There's a good many of us here who could say we've seen Goodfellas at least 25 times. Will there ever be a time where someone will say they seen The Irishman at least 25 times?

Goodfellas (and this may sound blasphemous to some, maybe even to myself) has now surpassed The Godfather or its sequels as the greatest mob movie ever. It's so weird because in 1990 my friend wanted to go see it and I talked him into seeing The Last Boy Scout or something else that was out at that time. When I finally saw it, I realized what I had been missing in my film education up until that point ... Scorsese was THE MAN! Also, I have fond memories (just barely) of using Goodfellas as a drinking game. I did love The Irishman but it's a different kind of beast from Goodfellas.
