When I think 'Christmas movie' the first movie that comes to mind for me (which I doubt anything will beat it in terms of more legitimate Christmas movie) is... 1) Christmas Vacation (1989) - 7/10 (within my Top 153 movies) that's pretty clear cut for legitimate Christmas movies (many movies others are listing ain't legitimate Christmas movies) as nothing else I am aware of would be above a 6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up) off the top of my head. p.s. some of the other movies listed by others in here are solid but I don't see them as Christmas movies like The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) etc. What makes you don't see as Christmas movies?

egon1982 ill just take a guess on what you mean... say Die Hard vs Christmas Vacation. Die Hard is sort of a half-assed Christmas movie (it's pretty much not a Christmas movie in my mind) where as Christmas Vacation is more of a legitimate Christmas movie. or put it this way... one could question whether something like Die Hard is a Christmas movie where as no one could question whether Christmas Vacation is a legitimate Christmas movie.

Die Hard is sort of a half-assed Christmas movie (it's pretty much not a Christmas movie in my mind) where as Christmas Vacation is more of a legitimate Christmas movie. or put it this way... one could question whether something like Die Hard is a Christmas movie where as no one could question whether Christmas Vacation is a legitimate Christmas movie. Die Hard is a Christmas movie and one of the best action films ever made. Anyone debating it not being a Christmas movie to me is the ultimate eye roll. The film takes place around the holidays, is centered around a Christmas party at the plaza, John is only coming to L.A. for Christmas to see his family, there are loads of quotes and sight gags all centered around Christmas, the film even opens with a Christmas rap and ends with Let It Snow. If you want to argue that Die Hard 2 isn't a Christmas movie despite taking place around the same time? I could see that as being valid. Or a film like Invasion USA or Batman Returns or Brazil or any of Shane Black's scripts that happen to take place around the Holidays. But not Die Hard. So many parts of the film, as well as the theming and even music, is Christmas related. Stop with this inane debate. It's a Christmas movie as is Lethal Weapon, Rocky IV, Batman Returns. Just because you don't like it or it doesn't fit into your wholesome idea of what a Christmas movie is? That doesn't make it not a Christmas movie. This is like people complaining about any of the Christmas themed horror movies not being Christmas movies. It's just as inane and mind boggling.

The movie could still be basically the same movie if you took the whole Christmas aspect out of it. It is a movie that takes place on Christmas, but it is not a Christmas movie. Christmas movies are movies that are about Christmas imo, Die Hard is a hero vs villain action movie, the Christmas stuff is secondary to that. I don't have an issue with people considering it a Christmas movie and I understand why people consider it a Christmas movie. I am more sensible about the issue though, meaning if someone considers it a Christmas movie it doesn't bother me. It makes complete sense. It is more a subjective issue anyway. What I consider a Christmas movie only applies to me. I only bring it up when the debate is brought up and that is just to say what my take on it is. I have no interest in changing anybody's mind. I might even concede that it is Christmas movie, but it is just less a Christmas movie than stuff like Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story and that I will not list it on Christmas movie lists. I also won't list Christmas horror movies on Christmas movie lists.

Sure, this is a fair point and all as going by the smallest thing whether something qualifies as a Christmas movie or not then by these standards one could claim Die Hard etc is a Christmas movie. I (and you for that matter) just tend to have a higher standard for what qualifies as a Christmas movie is all. I don't expect to change someones mind much either but I just tend to list only Christmas movies that no one could question whether they are a Christmas movie or not where as Die Hard people can question whether it's a Christmas movie. that's my general thing right there I totally agree. because Horror is not something I would affiliate with Christmas in general since Christmas is about Jesus Christ since He's the reason for the season and that's more of a positive thing, Horror movies (like your standard slasher ones and the like) tend to be more negative in nature.

moviemouthI would argue we do have a higher standard because... it's true in the sense some people will call a movie a 'Christmas movie' if it's slightly affiliated with Christmas (or thereabouts) where as you and I tend to be more picky on what truly qualifies as a Christmas movie. hence, we have higher standards. but I can see how one might want to word it like you did so you can potentially avoid conflict with others etc and it does not give off any potential 'superior' vibe. but I say the hell with it and just call it like it is as some movies are more obviously truly Christmas than others are and I can't see someone trying to refute it because it's obvious some movies are more truly Christmas than others are (I am sure you get what I mean since we have a similar opinion) as even if someone's opinion varies a bit on what's truly Christmas I tend to use something like Christmas Vacation as a rough measuring stick for true Christmas movies as one can only lower from certain standards so much before it blurs the line on Christmas movie vs not a Christmas movie etc.
