I found it thrilling when I was young but haven’t watched it for years, my taste runs more to comedies these days. But it is an amazing film and I think people will always want to watch it. Scarlett is an interesting character and so is her relationship to Mammy, who is the only person she really pays any attention to. Mammy is a very strong character. She was in the book too.

it's a movie that takes place in the Civil War, which was a different time. How dumb are people?

Should it be shown to 3rd graders in the south? Cannot imagine why it would be shown to third graders anywhere... it's a complicated story of adult relationships not really suitable or understandable by children in early grade school.

Well, there's a 3rd grader in the White House & he's not 9yrs old either.

It's fine for a movie or tv show to have characters who are not socially acceptable by today's (or any day's) standards. That is not the same as condoning or celebrating a terrible ideal. I've read books on philosophies that I chose not to accept but now I have an understanding of those ideologies so I don't believe fat radio propagandists who call everyone that disagrees with them a communist. I know a communist is a specific thing, not the same as a socialist, or a fascist, and not a term for someone who doesn't accept American capitalism. Reading Marx doesn't make you a communist, it makes you educated. Reading Mark Twain doesn't make you a racist just because he wrote racist characters. And watching GWTW isn't going to make you a racist either.

Classic film, presentation wise a product of its time. Scarlett is a tenacious headstrong woman and in this sense an inspirational character whose flaws are also laid bare. Wind will never be gone.

I have no desire to watch it again, at the end of the day it still glamorizes a group that committed treason against their country. (And not exactly for honorable reasons). But it should never disappear, and should always be appreciated and respected for the monumental achievement of film that it is.

free state of jones (2016) is a recent Matthew McConaughey period movie, not particularly memorable, but makes the interesting point that Confederate resistance was about preserving the wealthy Southern lifestyle slavery enabled. In other words, money and greed was the root of the Civil War, rather than any social principle.

...rather than any social principle. I was responding to this. I'm not sure what you meant but I live in a state where grown men dress up in Confederate uniforms and march in parades carrying the traitor flag. They are part of an organization that spends millions (hard to believe but true) of dollars trying to whitewash the Civil War, claiming it wasn't about slavery, the North was the aggressor, and the traitor flag is cultural heritage. My point, if it wasn't obvious, is that the motivations of the Confederacy do not excuse their actions. If I misunderstood your comment, perhaps you can understand why given where I live.

I agree with that point.. you might have thought otherwise, although I was interpreting the movie, so it's not my opinion. I'm not American (we never even covered American history at school - always Britain & Europe).
