This is easily my favorite "monster" movie ever made. I mean, that's essentially what it is, but it's done so damn well and you get so wrapped up in the atmosphere of the film that you forget that at its core it's basically just a simple formulaic story of men hunting down a man-eating/killer monster, in this case a giant shark, which effectively grounds the film in reality and makes it even more engrossing than if it were some more surreal type of creature they were after.
Interestingly, I've never read the novel, but I've heard that people who have actually usually tend to say that the movie is better. A friend of mine who is quite fond of Peter Benchley's novels told me that, himself, which is giving quite a lot of credit to the power of the film.

Jaws is my favorite "monster" movie too. I like that we don't really get to see the shark until last third of the picture.

I must say, I've read the novel, and those people are right. It's rare to find a movie that outshines the book, but this is one of them. Especially with the ripped off ending...

The novel is an entertaining read, but the film was wise to eliminate some of the "melodramatic fat" of the novel, as I put it, in favor of a more streamlined story. The film is simply one of the finest of all "summer blockbusters", and is extremely iconic, right down to that score by John Williams. It's one of my personal favorites.

Excellent film. Memorable story and characters. And suspense to match. So much rewatch value. It's one those films whenever I come across it playing. I would stop everything to watch it. No matter, whereabouts in the movie.
The novel is a good read, but not a patch on the film. Quite different in tone and thick on family drama with a dreary payoff.

My favorite movie of all time, it's basically been the blueprint for most horror/thrillers to follow. That primal fear of being eaten while drowning, it affects us all on some level. The book is good, the movie is better. The book has a lot of filler that Spielberg dumped in favor of a more streamlined story.

Agreed. It's so good you don't even relate it to typical monster movies.

"You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the best ab-libs of all time.

Hooper's affair with Mrs B was unneeded.

After I saw it the first time (when I was about 10), I had to take a shower afterwards, and I remember being worried that a shark was going to come out of the shower head. Now that's a fear-inducing movie!

Now that's a fear-inducing movie! Same but with swimming pools. Especially if they were a little murky from too much or not enough chlorine.

One of its greatest strengths is it does something most horror movies don't (or can't) do: it gave us characters we cared about. Characters we enjoyed watching. I wasn't waiting for any of them to die. On the contrary, I worried they would.
