do you say "I don't mean to toot my own horn, but..." ? Almost never. I'm known for my humility , which I know is a form of inverted bravado, and I'm expert at it. As to literal horn tooting, I usually don't engage in it unless it's absolutely true and needs emphasizing. I view it as unattractive but sometimes necessary, even for the most modest among us. It's a way of making a score, and we do have to score sometimes, hey?
