...will have made ~$6 billion in four years. (And this doesn't even take into account toys/merch, video games, TV shows, etc.) Remember that when you see people saying the Disney Star Wars is "underperforming".

4b lucasfilm purchase 1.5b productions 1b marketing 2b park expansion They have yet to make a penny and ran into the ground in 4 years In fairness though SW retail sales amounted to $3b in 2016, $2.4b in 2017 and $1.9b in 2018 iirc, just off merch sales Disney recouped it's purchase cost and all movie cost with almost a billion to spare, thing to note is though how those merch numbers heavily declined, movies are not the only thing seeing huge declines in sales, but yeah the purchase has paid for itself already, but then we also have to consider I think Lucas still gets 10% or something of all Star Wars sales or that may just be merch or a smaller cut I dunno but he still has a small piece of that pie also.

Clothes. Toys Calendars Posters Books Games (my kid was playing some D&D type SW game for a couple months with friends)

Yeah no doubt, SW has already paid for itself, though something in what you posted is misleading, SW is not valued at $65b, that's it's estimated lifetime gross, when Disney brought Lucasfilm they actually overpaid for it by some reports, it was valued in the mid $3b's iirc but Lucas refused to sell for less than what Disney paid for Marvel so they over paid for it, I think it was $4.05b.
But everything SW now though is like anything else I imagine, they have already recouped their investment now it's all profit based on a project by project basis.

Clothes. Toys Calendars Posters Books Games (my kid was playing some D&D type SW game for a couple months with friends) These are the merch numbers for SW since 2015. $2.842 billion in 2015. $3.049 billion in 2016. $2.403 billion in 2017. $1.923 billion in 2018
That's over $10b in 4 years, even if worst case Disney after cost and everything else only took back 50% of that, which I doubt is the case, they would have paid off the purchase of Luasfilm easily, and that's not even factoring in the movies theatrical sales which at just over $5b now probably translates into around $2.3-4b...so yeah DSW has been easily a highly successful venture for Disney, it would be ridiculous to say otherwise, whether it will be as highly profitable going forward however who knows, it is worth noting how DSW merch did peak and then heavily go into a decline whilst other things like Spider-Man, Avengers and such all have maintained or have risen in terms of sales both in merch and ticket sales in recent years, but then peaks and valleys, who knows in 5 years Star Wars could be grossing $5b in a single year for merch, we just don't know.

Funny how some people donβt know the definition of βunderperformβ. They assume itβs being used as a synonym of failure. underperform - to decrease in value; to perform less than expected It means exactly what the word implies. Nothing more, nothing less.
