is there a possibility that you don’t engage with them in a way that would inspire/promote/allow something interest to be said? have you tried asking them something interesting? Every single human being has something interesting to say. It’s somewhat arrogant to say otherwise and points more to a limitation on the receiving end. People with mental limitations have something interesting to say, murderers have something interesting to say, mute and deaf people have something interesting to say, toddlers and grandmothers too. The worst politicians imaginable and the most boring actresses have something interesting to say. The worst posters here or the dullest appearing cashiers in Walmart have something interesting to say. If you feel like nobody around you / most people around you say anything interesting in years I would really look for problem elsewhere... Yeah I'm the problem. *rolls eyes* is that not even a possibility to you, no matter how tiny?

I don't know how much this interests you, but do you notice who is right handed vs. left handed? What about who is ambidextrous? I have been noticing lately that there are an awful lot of left handed actors and wondering if that in any way is connected to their entering the acting profession. I'm left handed!! Whatcha want me to act like?

I'll get back with you when I'm sober. Trust me on this, the worst is being a left-handed guitarist. I'll go into a guitar shop and see dozens of guitars that I can't really do anything with, and maybe if I'm lucky there might be 2 or 3 left-handed guitars to check out. I went to a guitar shop in Olympia, Washington once, the town where Kurt Cobain lived as Nirvana got going. The place had zero left-handed guitars. I said something about how Kurt would have been bummed out if he shopped there, and the guy behind the counter got pissed at me. Hey, don't get pissy with me, stock a left-handed guitar or two! That was a pretty interesting story, hopefully the OP liked it!

I would add something about a french fry scoop sucking for left handers , but I'm still wasted and guitars are cooler!!

While I was in Olympia, I visited the small house that Cobain lived in while he was writing many of the songs that eventually ended up on Nevermind. But I don't want to overburden this thread with TOO MANY interesting stories, so we'll save that for another day.

Interesting. For the longest time, left-handed people were still forced to learn how to play instruments right-handed. Mark Knopfler is a great example, he is left-handed but had to learn to play right-handed. God knows how many youngsters lost interest in music because they weren't allowed to play naturally. I've been told by MANY people that I should play guitar right-handed because my left hand is my stronger hand, and therefore could work the fretboard better. When I hear this, I always ask "well then why don't right-handed people play left-handed then?", which I have NEVER gotten a proper response to. I've tried playing guitar right-handed, believe me I have, and it doesn't feel natural for me at all. When I play left-handed, it's smooth as silk, so I'll keep doing it that way. That's worked for guys like Hendrix, McCartney, and Cobain, so who am I to argue?

millar70: I'm right-handed... tried picking at a guitar a few times in my life. Always did it right-handed. It was hard enough trying to do it right-handed, couldn't imagine in a million years trying to tackle it left-handed. That would just seem very awkward, clumsy and unnatural to me!

I am left handed. Taught myself to play guitar right handed with my brothers guitar.

Maybe Cobain just felt more comfortable playing left-handed, who knows? I'm pretty sure both Hendrix and McCartney are naturally left-handed, I'm positive McCartney is. You just gotta do whatever feels comfortable to you. I do most everything left-handed, but I do golf with a right-handed swing, same when I used to bat in baseball. I also kick more naturally with my right leg, not my left one.

millar70: on second thought, playing a guitar requires actively using both hands, so it's hard to say that you're really playing it "right-handed" vs. "left-handed". You made a good point about the more dominant hand playing the fretboard better. Even though my right hand is the more dominant, I didn't seem to have a problem with using my left hand on the fretboard. But switch it around, I don't know, somehow it would feel unnatural. But maybe if you gave me a left-hand guitar and let me take a crack at it, I might have a different opinion. Still, in my mind, I really believe that me strumming with the right hand, and working the fretboard with the left hand, feels the most natural.
