Richard Widmark was born on The Second Day of Christmas in 1914, the last kid in a long line of kids in an Italian family, but the nice Widmark family, who were neighbours, adobted him, thus he got a Swedish-American upbringinging, and his blondish hair made him fit in. More than thirty years later he would become famous for throwing a wheelchair bound woman down the stairs. A man whose smile you could never trust. Richard Widmark 1914 - 2009
Widmark appeared on Broadway in 1943 in F. Hugh Herbert's Kiss and Tell and in William Saroyan's Get Away Old Man, directed by George Abbott, which ran for 13 performances. He was unable to join the military during World War II because of a perforated eardrum. He was in Chicago appearing in a stage production of Dream Girl with June Havoc when 20th Century Fox signed him to a seven-year contract. Here follow examples: Kiss of Death 1947, earning his only Oscar nomination, as Tommy Udo The Street with No Name 1948 Road House 1948 Night and the City 1950 Panic in the Streets 1950 No Way Out 1950 Halls of Montezuma 1951 Pickup on South Street 1953 Hell and High Water 1954 Broken Lance 1954 Mystery Guest on What's My Line? 1954 The Tunnel of Love 1958 The Alamo 1960 Cheyenne Autumn 1964 The Bedford Incident 1965 Madigan 1968 Coma 1978 Against All Odds 1984 True Colours 1991, became his screen farewell. ...and many more! Thanks for watching!

I liked him as the hard-driving destroyer captain in The Bedford Incident.

I've had a good year for Widmark. I finally watched night and the city (1950) which has been one of very few ☆☆☆☆ views of the year. Watched it 3x now. And also watched kiss of death (1957), a solid FOX crime drama, which owes most of it's entertainment value to Widmark's performance.
current Widmark 10.. pickup on south street (1953) night and the city (1950) judgment at nuremberg (1961) road house (1948) kiss of death (1947) panic in the streets (1950) warlock (1959) the street with no name (1948) madigan (1968) the law and jake wade (1958)
to see.. no way out (1950)

He looks so Swedish and un-Italian. Maybe the Swedish father had been playing around? A common scenario where I live. Father's Day is the most baffling day in the calendar here.

More trivia: Widmark was married to screenwriter Jean Hazlewood from 1942 until her death in 1997. They had a daughter, Anne Heath Widmark, an artist and author who was married to baseball player Sandy Koufax from 1969 to 1982. In 1999, Widmark married Susan Blanchard, the daughter of Dorothy Hammerstein and stepdaughter of Oscar Hammerstein II; she had been Henry Fonda's third wife. Green City, Missouri is the site of Widmark Airport in northeastern Missouri. Towns that are the size of Green City, with a population numbered at 688 inhabitants in 2000, usually do not have airports, but Widmark owned a cattle ranch in the area during the 1950s and 1960s. Widmark contributed funds to the construction of an airport, which led to its being named in his honor. Despite having spent a substantial part of his career appearing in gun-toting roles such as cowboys, police officers, gangsters and soldiers, Widmark disliked firearms and was involved in several gun-control initiatives. In 1976, he stated: I know I've made kind of a half-assed career out of violence, but I abhor violence. I am an ardent supporter of gun control. It seems incredible to me that the United States are the only civilized nation that does not put some effective control on guns.

He did an interview for Swedish television in the mid 1980's were he explained his ancestry. His Italian parents couldn't take care of him, but in Widmark's own words "the nice Widmark family, who were neighbours, agreed to take care of me", and adobted him.

Widmark became one of my favorite actors even as a kid when I saw his early work after school on Dialing for Dollars Movie Showcase. I like his Westerns especially.
Tommy Udo was my Mom’s favorite villain too. She loved the wheelchair scene.

Dirty Santa PaulsLaugh I wonder what it is with that generation of Moms ? This attraction to the bad boys Mom loved his laugh and never missed a Widmark picture … lucky me got to see them too ! Dialing for Dollars Movie Showcase was probably similar to Milion Dollar Movie … early introduction to the classics starring wonderfully iconic actors ... some of whom who were already dead by the time we got to see them !

Quinn and Fonda’s relationship in the movie is sick.
