I've lost count of the number of times my luggage was delayed, but I have never lost an item.
My brother once came to visit and his luggage didn't make it. For several days we kept calling the airline for an update on when it would be delivered and they wouldn't tell us anything. Finally we gave up and assumed it had been lost. After two weeks we filed a claim for reimbursement and then magically they found it. It felt like they only decided to finally look for it when they were faced with the threat of having to pay.

Back when I was in university, I had to take a plane down a few times to go home for Christmas.
Each time, I had two pieces of luggage with me. One, I was allowed to carry on the plane. The other was in storage in the plane.
The airline managed to lose the other piece of luggage the one time. So, when I found out it was missing, I had to stand in line to make a claim. They took down all my information, and would investigate.
They did eventually find it. It was kinda funny how I got it back. There was a van that went up and down the street - likely looking for my house.

It always made it back to me albeit once with a more considerable delay. However I had a luggage robbed of some things that were inside once .

Not lost for good, but on a trip to Boston, I had to change planes in Denver. This was when the Denver airport was new ... sometime in the 90s ... and, they were having an embarrassing problem with lost luggage. It had become cliche, and subject to jokes. Sure enough, my luggage didn't arrive with me in Boston. The airline delivered it to the hotel, the next morning. It was kind of fun being a part of such a celebrated mess-up.

No. Once I did set the jacket I had been wearing on the counter at Customs when returning from Europe and forgot to pick it up when I was finished. I called the airport and airlines and International check in etc... as soon as I realized (at most an hour had passed) but to no avail. My jacket and all the contraband I had sewed up in the liner was lost to me forever.
