Never liked "Maniacs" but she's made a couple of very good solo albums. Ophelia and Tigerlily are both excellent.

The band had their own style but now she can sing with wide emotional range like Adele.

Don't know it if it's a solo outing. Unless you mean 'Like The Weather' from 10,000 Maniacs' album 'In My Tribe'.

Billy Bragg has been remembering record producer Gary Smith online. Smith passed away this week. May he rest in peace.
"Very sorry to learn of the death, after a short illness, of one of my dearest friends, Gary Smith. I met him in the mid-80s when his band Lifeboat opened for me at the Living Room in Providence, Rhode Island. He was running a recording studio in Boston called Fort Apache where in the following years he produced records by Throwing Muses, the Pixies, 10,000 Maniacs, the Chills, Blake Babies, Tanya Donelly and Juliana Hatfield among others. The Fort was an amazing place where young bands making challenging music could find in Gary a sympathetic ear and a lot of good advice. He produced the ‘Accident Waiting To Happen’ single which I recorded there with the Red Stars, as well the b-side ‘Sulk’ which was written during the session. The Mermaid Avenue tracks that just feature Natalie Merchant and myself were recorded under Gary’s supervision at the Fort, as were the two tracks that Natalie and I wrote and recorded together there, ‘Party of God’ and ‘Bread and Circuses’. Toward the end of the 90s, he moved to rural New Hampshire where he led the rebirth of the local radio station and opened a venue/restaurant called ‘Popolo’. He was also godfather to our son, Jack. Dedicated to the idea of community, whether at Fort Apache or in the small New Hampshire town he made his home, Gary was the kind of guy who could make things happen. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him."

Was listening to a rarities disc the other night and had forgotten about this little gem she did with David Byrne and Fatboy Slim

I saw her live once, probably around 1999.

Sure. At the time I only knew her from 10,000 Maniacs, which I liked. Actually that's not entirely true - I loved their Unplugged album, but wasn't very familiar with the rest of their discography, or with her solo career. Still, when I saw the show advertised, I jumped at the chance. I remember that I cracked a joke that got everybody laughing, including her. Earlier in the show she had joked that she was 21 years old or something. Then at one point she spoke about John Lennon and how devastated she was when he died. I quickly made the calculation and shouted “But you were only two!”. She replied something, but I don’t remember what it was.

This is great -
Everything else makes me want to choke myself to death with the complete collected works of Walt Whitman.

I saw 10,000 Maniacs in concert when I was 15, Blind Man's Zoo Tour, and 19, Our Time in Eden. Here's a great solo song of hers: Thanks. I believe she's singing here with N'Dea Davenport of the Brand New Heavies.
You're welcome. Did you go? I love her.

Unfortunately, not. She does play where I live though, in England.

You're welcome. Did you go? I love her. Look at her! Oh my gosh, is she just the coolest, the cutest and the best sport or what? Love her and I love Tigerlily; it's an excellent album that has aged impeccably. Speaking of which, she still has the greatest hair. Oh, I was asking if you went with regards to this from you, last August: "I believe she's singing here with N'Dea Davenport of the Brand New Heavies." Delayed follow-up, on my part. The video was just something I found on YouTube and grabbed up since it exemplifies her continuing awesomeness.

Slight possible miscommunication aside, so glad you love her. She's awesome.
