Dame Maggie Smith
One of the world's most famous and distinguished actresses, Maggie Smith was born on December 28, 1934 in Ilford, Essex, England. She began her career on stage as a student, performing at the Oxford Playhouse in 1952, and made her professional debut on Broadway in New Faces of '56.
She made her television debut in 1955 and her feature film debut in 1958. She came to prominence on the big screen with her roles in films like The V.I.P.s, The Pumpkin Eater, Young Cassidy, and playing Desdemonda opposite Laurence Olivier in Othello (1965), for which she received the first of six Oscar nominations.
She's won two Oscars: as Best Actress for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969), and as Best Supporting Actress for California Suite (1978). And she's won numerous other awards, including a record 4 BAFTA Awards (out of 20 nominations) and three Golden Globe Awards (out of 12 nominations).
