So Russia finally did something right, the problem is they did it for the wrong reasons. Doing the right thing for the wrong reason still means you are wrong. The fact that JW is a child-abusing cult should be the reason it is banned everywhere with all its leaders imprisoned for life. To be fair, there are several other child abusing cults which should suffer the same fate - Scientology and that Quiverfull nonsense (the Duggars) are two that come to mind. While I am not JW, & certainly disagree with most of their theology & practices, I think Russia has made a huge mistake going down this road. Banning religion only makes adherents of the particular religion stronger in their beliefs.

Now they have freedom of religion supposedly, so they have to cherry pick who they want get rid of and they can;t use religion itself as the reason, but they came blame the notion of picking the religion as the reasoon for the ban since it causes disruption. It;s goofy and fortunately, it's been covered enough to reveal how stupid Russia is at handling stuff like they are a legitimately non-sucky country. I don't even think they pretend to be non-blatant about the ways they simply want to get rid of something. The Russian Orthodox Church could say whatever they want about how bad JW's are or even how bad Russia is, but they have millions of adherents including Putin. If you tallied all of the JW's in russia and plopped them at their headquarters in St Petersburg, they still wouldn't make it to 5% of that city's population and yet they are extremists for saying God loves them over everyone else. Now rather than law abiding citizens that haven;t done anything to their country, they are going to have a bunch of criminals as they smuggle their literature in like a cartel of heroin dealers and secretly have meetings like a KGB assassination committee. |
