Animals and humans have the same physical problems, therefore they have weak sight too. The question is, how do you know that your pet has bad sight, if it cannot talk to you? I have noticed that my dog suddenly started to sniff around a lot more than usual, maybe this is a sign of bad sight.

If your dog is sniffing around for food vs. seeing it first, then that is a possibility. But it could just be something your dog is detecting that you can't. A couple of things to ask yourself about your dog: Is your dog more easily startled by things that were detected before? Does your dog seem clumsy when it starts to get dark in the house, especially if something not usually in the way has been placed there?
Hope things work out well. Your Vet should be able to test your dog to get a definitive answer.

I wouldn't be overly worried. A dog's strongest asset is its sense of smell. I have a mate who owned a three-legged dog which was also totally blind. The animal got around just fine and without help, and it lived to a ripe doggy age.

I would say as soon as it started running into the walls but yeah, there's a possibility that you may never know if the dog is losing sight unless you speak to a vet. Their sense of smell is very strong, so much so that they may be able to maneuver around without sight.
I owned a dachshund that had a heart condition but we were never aware of it. When we took him to the vet for a checkup, the doc there gave him an x-ray and found water surrounding it. We never knew he was having any problems. They gave him medication and he took it until he passed away in 2006.
Animals are a mystery.

Take them to an optometrist for an eye exam.

If your pet does have weak sight, is there all that much you can do about it. I mean if its something that surgery can help, maybe your pet could have an operation. But, if your pet is like us, sometimes humans just need to wear glasses. As far as I know there are no dog or cat glasses.
