A 105 million R rated sci fi action satire movie no A list stars and the director coming off the massive bomb Showgirls? Very interesting

PV was known for sci-fi, RoboCop and Total Recall both opened at # 1

Because his last 3 films before that all made over 4x their budget, 2 grossing into the multiple hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide and Robocop spawned a franchise.
Also Showgirls probably wasn't that massive a bomb compared to the reward, and apparently did great on VHS, a less restricted film delving back into the genre blend Robocop & Total Recall thrived on probably made for an easy sell to a studio.

Because of the excellent one liners...
“Would you like to know more?”
“I’m from Buenos Aires and I say kill them all!”
“The only good bug is a dead bug”
“The mobile infantry made me into the man I am today.”
“It’s afraid!!!!”
Plus the obvious allusions to a fascist military dictated society and great propaganda clips. The effects were well done for the period which helped.
It had some beautiful leads as well. Dina Meyer was gorgeous.

Clancy Brown showing the importance of using a knife during battle. “Medic!!!” I'm guessing Captain America watched this movie because he pulls the same move in Winter Soldier when he nails a guy's hand to the wall before he can hit the alarm.

Independence Day came out the year before and was a massive success, so doing another alien invasion film wasn't seen as a risk. Also keep in mind the 90s was an era when R-rated movies were still quite lucrative (Terminator 2, Saving Private Ryan, and the Matrix come to mind). Starship Troopers was basically just "Aliens" (a massive success) with some satire thrown in.

one of the few examples were a bad movie, terrible source material and horrible screenplay turned out to be hilariously entertaining and quite layered if you get the anti-fascist satire. A cult classic, not as good as Robocop of course but still. They do not make them like that anymore. The sequels were just insipid and bad alas.

You’d think they would at least get a big name actor to grdine Jurassic Park didn't really have a big name either. Like JP, they probably figured the special FX in Starship Troopers were enough to sell the film.

It was Sony-Tri-Star wasn't it? They weren't as anal as the other companies. I bet Universal, etc wouldn't have greenlit it.
Dina Meyer was such a victim in this movie--I think it was part of the warped satire so people would be thinking WTF? What a face, and yet never given much good parts and who was the dummy who decided to cover her in makeup and a wig for that Star Trek movie?
The stupidest decision since doing the blue reptile thing to Rebecca Romijn in the X-men films (but in that case the reason wasn't a surprise-the director is gay).
Starship Troopers was bumped out of its summer slot by Spielberg's Men in Black.
