Salzmank --- Spot on! I didn't think it would take Geoff Lord long. It was the second solution, I suppose? Not the--er--minimalism of the first?

Famous spot (no spot more famous than the g-spot) in an advance (loan) = lo g an Oh, Lord. Sorry, Soullimbo, but that's very oblique--and not the way I got it, to be honest. As for what I did, Pete , I put together the words "location" [famous spot] and "began" [advance(d)]--thus "Logan." Now, that doesn't fit the terms that Soullimbo gave, but I thought it was confirmed by the "one word title, name of character" hint--and then I looked Logan up and [spoilers for that movie] found that the character died in the end--"didn't make it." I haven't seen the movie.

soullimboDespite my problems with that one clue, I want to thank you for the puzzle--very clever and enjoyable. I'm an American, and we have so few "cryptic crosswords," so it's good to exercise the brain with them!

soullimbo Despite my problems with that one clue, I want to thank you for the puzzle--very clever and enjoyable. I'm an American, and we have so few "cryptic crosswords," so it's good to exercise the brain with them! You're very welcome. I enjoy compiling them. I hosted an online forum game a while back, designing quizzes/trivia/puzzles for players to solve. Most of the ones I posted here were in fact part of those. The problem with these types of things is ensuring that none of the questions can simply be "googled". There's no challenge in being able to use a search engine, IMO. I'll see if I can find that forum again and compile another lot of questions from it.
