Movies that were bad because of subpar acting, bad scripting, or just failure to follow through with the premise, but you feel that a good movie could have been made from that premise.

One film that currently on HBO is Welcome to Marwen. It’s not a horribley bad movie and the CGI-ing humans to look like fashion dolls and action figures is fantastic. Bob Zemeckis beats the uncanny valley, but the narrative doesn’t gel. It could have been a better film.

Urban Legend. Killer going around slaying people in the form of urban legends is genius. Movie itself is a subpar Scream knockoff. "Aha actor from Dawson Creek in are moovy so we play Dawson Creek song lol"

A lot of Philip K. Dick adaptations fall into this category, as well movies inspired by him (like IN TIME).

I remember Roger Ebert saying something on how if you're going to do a remake then you should consider remaking a bad movie with a good premise. This way you can get a chance to right the wrong of something that had good potential for it with the previous film.

Has there ever been a case like this when they took a weak movie and remade it into a better one?

The remake with George Clooney and Brad Pitt was overall better. Not a classic but they brought out things the Rat Pack didn't.

The Fly. Some say Carpenter’s The Thing is this to The Thing From Another World. I disagree myself. I have never seen the original version of The Fly, but I love the Cronenberg movie. The original is a typical 50s B movie. It has the same basic premise, but for example there's no gradual transformation - the guy goes through the machine and comes out as a guy with the head of a fly and a fly with the head of a guy.
