Does Oscar winner Louis Gossett Jr. (only age 83) just miss the final cut?

Yes, I chose to start with actors (and actresses in the other thread) who are at least 85. I'm looking forward to adding others when they reach that age (though I'm not sure they will feel that way ).

Then hang in there until May 2021, Louis -- when you will be eligible for inclusion in Spider's honored list.
(and thanks for both listings)

BUMP TO UPDATE for 2020: We lost four this year (Kirk Douglas at the age of 103, Max Von Sydow, Stuart Whitman, and Ian Holm), and we added four (Donald Sutherland, Judd Hirsch, and Topol), all of whom turned 85.

Hey, matt, he'll be 85 in May, but I won't post the update until December or January. He's definitely on the list though, and I expect him to still be there when the time comes.

If you include Sutherland - honorary recipient but shockingly never nominated for a competitive Oscar - then should you also include Claude Jarman Jr? He is 86 and recipient of the Juvenile Oscar that used to be presented in the 40s and 50s.

Agreed - top of my list of Oscar injustices - Myrna Loy the distaff equivalent.

Edward G. Robinson and Glenn Ford also on that Oscar injustice list.

How Edward G. Robinson wasn't nommed for Double Indemnity and Key Largo is a MYSTERY. And he could easily have picked up a "career" reward for Cincinnati Kid or Soylent Green.

The DOUBLE INDEMNITY pass-over is a double injustice.
Barry Fitzgerald was double-nominated for GOING MY WAY, losing to Crosby as Lead but winning as Supporting.
If he had only been awarded one of the two (he did win the New York Film Critics Award as Lead) -- then MacMurray (as lead) or Robinson (as Support) might have received a deserved nomination.
The Academy disallowed that situation the following year.

Edward G. Robinson and Glenn Ford also on that Oscar injustice list. Agreed on EGR - I'll add Sterling Hayden for DR StTRANGELOVE😄. In truth I assumed Ford had a nom for blackboard jungle

Add Herbert Marshall and Joseph Cotten to the Oscar injustice list.
Marshall- Little Foxes, Foreign Correspondant, Trouble in Paradise
Joseph Cotten - Citizen Kane, love letters, The third man, Shadow of a Doubt, I’ll Be seeing you.
Both actors gave great performances in films where they were overshadowed by a bigger star, or in a genre the academy rarely honored. Marshal’s early forte was light comedy, Cotten was always feeding straight lines to ORSON E Welles.

Yes, I absolutely agree. He was beneath my radar, but I'll correct the post to include him. Thanks for the recommendation.

An FYI to everyone: There are actors who've won or been nominated for Oscars in other categories, but I've chosen to keep this list to performance winners/nominees only. And if I've missed anyone else in my research (Special, Honorary, or Juvenile Awards in particular), please let me know.

Thank you for these updates, Spider. So good to know that a lot of Hollywood royalty is still with us. Just want to mention that Michael Caine is also a 2X Winner.

And thanks for the correction, something I knew but that got lost in my counting of his numerous nominations. Will fix.

Also: Shirley Jones(86)-Oscar winner Hi, marianne.
When I first created the threads I decided to separate them by gender. Maybe not the best idea, but it's the one we're stuck with now.
